Michigan Ousts Sooners in Ann Arbor, 63-52
March 22, 2004 | Men's Basketball
Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Oklahoma's season ended as Daniel Horton scored nine points in the final eight minutes to lead Michigan past the Sooners 63-52 on Monday in the second round of the NIT.
Horton finished with 12 points, Dion Harris scored 17 and Chris Hunter had 10 for the Wolverines (20-11), who will host Hawaii on Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
Brandon Foust scored 14 points -- his second-highest career output -- while Lawrence McKenzie had 10 and Jason Detrick added nine points for the depleted, but scrappy Sooners (20-11). Foust also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.
Oklahoma started the game with eight players available -- including four freshmen and a sophomore -- and were down to seven when starter De'Angelo Alexander dislocated his right shoulder late in the first half. Alexander did not return and is expected to undergo surgery later this week.

When Alexander walked off the court, Sooners coach Kelvin Sampson saw two available players on the bench -- and four assistant coaches.
The Wolverines led 30-25 at halftime only to see Oklahoma open the second half on a 9-2 run to go up 34-32. Michigan retook the lead but couldn't put Oklahoma away until the final minute.
After McKenzie's 3-pointer pulled the Sooners within two with 3:40 left, Horton's two runners and Harris' two free throws put Michigan ahead by eight.
Bernard Robinson and Brent Petway scored eight points each for the Wolverines.
Michigan is in the postseason for the first time since the 2000 NIT because the school won an appeal of a postseason ban in September.
The program still is on probation, however, for sanctions stemming from its involvement with now-deceased booster Ed Martin.
The Sooners, absent from the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade, made their 23rd straight postseason appearance, the nation's longest active streak.
