NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma freshman point guard Drew Lavender was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Tuesday following standout performances in wins against Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
Lavender, OU's 5-7 point guard, averaged 21.0 points, 6.0 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting .571 from three-point range (8-for-14). The Columbus, Ohio, product scored 31 points at Texas A&M on Saturday, the most by an OU true freshman in 20 years (Tim McCalister scored 31 twice in 1983-84). Lavender was also 6-for-10 from three-point range against the Aggies and registered six assists and three steals. Nine of his 31 points came in the game's final two minutes and helped the Sooners come from behind to post a victory. Versus Texas Tech last Wednesday, Lavender scored 11 points and handed out five assists with only one turnover.
The rookie-of-the-week award marked the second time this season that Lavender was honored by the conference. He became the first freshman in Big 12 history to earn player-of-the-week acclaim (Dec. 15) following his performances in wins against Purdue and Prairie View A&M.
On the season, Lavender leads the Sooners in scoring (11.1 ppg), assists (3.8 apg), three-pointers (36) and minutes played (30.3 mpg). He also averages 1.5 steals to rank second on the squad. The last OU freshman to average as many points per game for an entire season was Jeff Webster (18.3) in 1990-91.
