Sampson Announces Transfer of Foust, Turner

December 21, 2004 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson announced Tuesday that sophomores Brandon Foust and Larry Turner will transfer from the school.

“Brandon and Larry are two fine young men who, for different reasons, are seeking to transfer,” said Sampson.  “My staff and I appreciate everything the two of them have done since they stepped foot on campus and will not stand in their way.  Our hope is that both of them encounter a great amount of success and happiness.”

Foust, a 6-6, 211-pound guard/forward, played in five games this year and averaged 2.8 points and 1.0 rebound in 11.6 minutes a contest.  He was not on the bench for either of OU's two most recent games.  As a freshman, the Columbus, Ohio, product averaged 4.1 points and 2.8 boards in 14.1 minutes a game.  Foust averaged 2.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in OU's first 25 games last year, but those numbers increased to 10.5 and 5.2, respectively, over the final six games.  He averaged 14.7 points and 6.7 boards over the final three games of the year.

“It pretty much came down to playing time,” said Foust.  “As far as my relationship with my coaches and teammates, everything's fine.  In fact, they helped me make my decision.  I don't know for sure where I'll end up, but there's a good chance it will be closer to home.”

The 6-11, 241-pound Turner also played in five games this year and averaged 2.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.2 minutes an outing.  Last season he averaged 3.2 points, 2.7 boards and 1.2 blocked shots.  From Milledgeville, Ga., Turner played in six games during the 2002-03 season before missing the remainder of the year for medical reasons.  He was later granted a medical hardship.

“The reason I'm transferring is because of my family,” said Turner.  “I have a six-month-old son and I need to move back East to help raise him.  Over the next couple of weeks I'm going to look into the possibility of continuing my playing career.

“I love my coaches and my teammates here,” continued Turner.  “I think we have a great team.  Coach Sampson has helped me develop as a player and as a man it hurts me to leave.  But Coach Sampson understands.  He and I will remain friends for a long, long time.”
