NORMAN, Okla. For the third time this season, an Oklahoma men's basketball player has been named Big 12 Rookie of the Week. Taj Gray earned the honor for the second time this year when he was named co-winner on Monday with Kansas State's Fred Peete.
Gray, a 6-9, 235-pound junior from Wichita, Kan., who was the unanimous choice as Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year, averaged 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a 66-48 win at Purdue and an 80-44 home victory over Northern Colorado. He shot a sparkling .789 from the field (15-for-19) over the two games and six of his baskets were dunks.
Against Northern Colorado on Saturday, Gray was 10-for-12 from the field (five field goals were slams) and pulled down 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. He is leading the Sooners in scoring (14.0 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg) while shooting .586 from the field and .732 from the free throw line.
Peete, a 6-4 sophomore guard for Kansas State, averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a pair of victories. Iowa State sophomore guard Curtis Stinson was named the league's player of the Week after averaging 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals over three outings.
Gray earned the Big 12's first rookie of the week award this season (Nov. 22) while fellow junior Terrell Everett was recognized with the same honor a week later.
The Sooners don't play again until Saturday when they face No. 9 Duke in the Dreyfus Classic at New York's Madison Square Garden. The 4 p.m. CST game will be nationally televised by CBS.
