November 17, 2004 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla.   No. 20 Kansas State swept the Oklahoma volleyball team by scores of 17-30, 16-30, 22-30 on Wednesday night at the Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kansas.  The loss dropped the Sooners to 11-15 on the season and 3-14 in Big 12 play, while the Wildcats improved to 18-8 and 12-5 in conference.

OU came out of the gates slow and KSU never allowed the Sooners back into the match.  Kansas State hit .435 for the match and jumped the Sooners with a .565 performance in the first game.

OU on the other hand hit under .100 in the first two games before salvaging a .219 effort in the final frame.  OU's defense was much better.  The Sooners, who were two matches removed from blocking a Big 12 season high 24.5 balls against Texas Tech, didn't tally a roof in the first two sessions.  They finished the match with four total blocks and 32 digs.

Box Score

Junior Gabriela Tonon was the only Sooner to hit double-digits in kills.  She hammered home 13 kills while hitting .152.  Sophomore Joanna Schmitt contributed eight kills and eight digs.

Sophomore Anna Monsen had the best outing of any Sooner with a  match-high 11 digs.  The Cottage Grove, Wis. native made the third start of her career at libero.

Freshman Julie Chester collected 30 assists and four digs.  Fellow rookie Anna Stadel had six kills and two block assists.

KSU countered with Sandy Werner, Gabby Guerre and Vali Hejjas, who each reached double-digits in kills.  Guerre, a senior setter, had 31 assists, six digs and seven block assists.

As a team KSU tallied 12 blocks with Guerre and senior Lisa Martin both posting seven assisted stuffs.

The Sooners have three matches remaining on their schedule and none tougher than the next.  No. 3 Nebraska and their 21-match winning streak will visit Norman on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.  The first 200 through the doors will receive free OU volleyball t-shirts.
