No. 20 Texas A&M Downs OU Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla. Despite the best efforts of outside hitter Joanna Schmitt, the Oklahoma volleyball team was unable to stave off a sweep (22-30, 18-30, 19-30) at the hands of No. 20 Texas A&M on Wednesday night in College Station. The Aggies defended their home court and improved to 9-5 overall, 5-3 in Big 12 play while OU dropped to 8-8 on the season and 0-8 in conference.

Schmitt, the Sooners' No. 1 offensive option for the last two season, had 16 kills against the dominant frontline of Texas A&M. A&M recorded 13 blocks to the Sooners five, but were unable to stop Schmitt, who was successful at a rate of .303. She also tallied 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Fellow outside attackers Keri Coats and Gabriela Tonon combined for 11 kills but were only able to hit at a combined rate of .040.

Senior libero Stephanie Tengram reached double-digits in digs for the third consecutive match with 10 on this night. She has averaged 4.44 digs per game over the last three matches. Her season average is 3.4 per game.

Freshman setter Julie Chester started for the third consecutive match and posted 31 assists, six digs and one block assists.

The biggest roadblock for the Sooners on this evening was the Aggie senior duo of Laura Jones and Melissa Munsch. Both attackers had 14 kills, while Munsch bested her counterpart with a .464 hitting percentage compared to Jones' .394 mark. Munsch also tallied a match-high 14 digs and joined OU's Schmitt as the only players to record double-doubles on this evening.

A noisy crowd of 1,877 attended the contest at the G. Rollie White Coliseum.

The Sooners return to the Howard McCasland Field House on Saturday evening when they will play Colorado at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on SoonerSports.com's O-Zone and live stats will also be available through the official web site of Sooners athletics.
