Volleyball Victorious In Season Opener

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma outside hitter Joanna Schmitt continues her player journal to take fans behind the scenes as the Sooners attack the 2004 season. The Sooners are off to an 8-4 start to the season.  They are coming off four heartbreaking losses to open the Big 12 conference season.  As for Schmitt, she has tallied two MVP awards through two non-conference tournaments this season.

Prior to preparing to play Kansas State on Wednesday, Joanna checked in with SoonerSports.com to talk about the season so far and answers questions from fans.  This is the fifth installment of Joanna's journal.  There is a link at the bottom of the page so you can submit questions for Joanna to reply to in her next entry.

How is everybody doing today?  Let's get this thing started.  I want to start off by thanking everybody for all the support you have been showing and hope that you continue to show your support for us.

Tonight we have a huge game with Kansas State.  I think it can be a huge opportunity.  I think that mindset is the way we have to go into every game, with the attitude that we're going to win.  I don't think any team is going to come in and take us out of our game especially at home.  We have this thing about protecting our house, hopefully we can do that tonight.  We'll focus on playing our game and not letting Kansas State take us out of our element.

Which OU player has the funkiest jump serve?  Which OU player will most likely be a cheerleader in the next life?  If the OU volleyball team were to stage a production of the Odd Couple, who would play Felix (the neat freak) and who would play Oscar (the slob)?
Mike from Norman, Okla.

I would have to say it's a tossup between Rachel Jackson and Laura Tomes for funkiest jump serve.  I'm pretty sure Rachel tosses it 30 feet in front of her.  Anna Stadel is definitely the player on the team that would be a cheerleader.  I don't think she'd like me telling everyone this, but she used to be a cheerleader in junior high and she has showed me some of her stuff.  Anna would play Oscar the slob because she has a little corner in the locker room that's full of her junk and she's never clean.  I don't know if we really have a neat freak, if I have to name one, I would probably say Rachel Jackson.

Dearest Joanna, I've noticed your excessive celebrations on the court when you get an awesome block....which is your favorite?  Is it the lunges or the airplane?
Megan Snyder from Waunakee, Wisc.

Oh my god Snyder, I miss you so much.  I hope everything is going okay with college and hope you are doing great.  You need to come visit me sometime.  As far as celebrations go, the lunges are great, but the airplane is more fun.  There is really no time for the airplane because you need everyone to do it.  The lunges are more practical to do in a game.

Joanna, it's Ms. Johnson your high school art teacher.  I am so very proud of you.  My question for you is are you taking any creative classes and is it too late to see you at a game in Iowa?
Ms. Johnson from Deerfield, Wisc.

Ms. Johnson, I haven't taken any art classes yet, I'm sorry.  I'll take some in the future once I get all my general eds out of the way.  You can still come see me play at Iowa State on October 23rd.

Hey Joanna!  I went to the OU volleyball camp this past summer and it was great.  I plan on coming again next year.  I was wondering how do you get on the OU volleyball team?  Do they have any tryouts?
Chelsea M. Croft from Choctaw, Okla.

The first step to getting recruited is playing club volleyball and playing against the best players at your level.  There are tryouts if you aren't being recruited.  I think you just need to contact the coach and go from there.

Well everyone, I have to head over to the gym for our game tonight.  If you can't make it tonight, don't miss our next home game against Missouri on Wednesday, October 6th at 7 p.m.  I hope to see you there.
