Journal Entry No. 5 (Jan. 27, 2004)
After the losses that we endured, this team really had to focus back on basketball and compete hard. After road defeats at Connecticut, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech -- we knew we had to get back and really work hard.
It started in practice. You know, coming in early, staying later -- getting shots up -- improving yourself individually to help your team out as a whole. We just wanted to get back to doing what we were doing when we were winning. That means practicing hard and competing.
I knew coming out against Kansas State that our team was focused and ready to play. We were competitive and we had a little toughness about us. Whatever happened, we weren't going to lose -- we were going to go after every rebound and make every hustle play. That's what really made me proud. Our team responded -- we were tired of losing games.
Jason, what teammate out of the past three years you've been playing basketball for Oklahoma has defended you the best and shut you down? I think it was Quannas White. What do you think?
- Quannas from New Orleans, La.
Man, Quannas White -- yeah, he was probably the best defender. He never shut me down though. I'm not just saying that because he asked the question. He really was the best defender I played with since I've been playing basketball. We used to have one-on-one matches every time we had free time and he was pretty hard to score on. Yeah, I'd say Quannas was the best I've faced.
Which team would you rather beat, Oklahoma State or Texas?
- Derrick from Altus, Okla.
Right now, we need to beat both of them. It really doesn't matter to me, as long as we can get a "W" -- that would be fine.
Jason, who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your career?
- Chris from Pawhuska, Okla.
My little brother Jermaine. He always tells me the truth. He doesn't just tell me what I want to hear -- he tells me the truth. He tells me if I need to pick it up rebounding or scoring. He always tells me. So, he's my biggest inspiration.
What do you think he'd tell you after watching you score 24 points against Kansas State?
It's about time -- but don't get satisifed!
