Bookout Decides on Season-Ending Surgery

NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson announced this morning that sophomore forward Kevin Bookout will undergo surgery on his right shoulder next week and will miss the remainder of the season.  Sampson said Bookout and his family made the decision after meeting with team physicians late Friday afternoon.

Bookout, a preseason Wooden Award candidate, sustained an injury during an Oct. 21 practice and has been limited all season.  The 6-8, 265-pound Stroud native finishes his sophomore campaign with averages of 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shot in 25.6 minutes per game.  He also shot .516 from the field.  Bookout played in 13 contests and missed the Dec. 13 Prairie View A&M game to rest the shoulder.

An All-American in the shot put as a freshman last year, Bookout will also miss the 2004 outdoor track season while rehabilitating his shoulder.  That process is expected to take four to five months.
