Sooner Players Back On Awards Circuit

Several Oklahoma football players will spend part of February back on the awards circuit, receiving awards that were announced earlier. The frequent flyer miles will pile up particularly quickly for Heisman Trophy winner Jason White, although several current and former Sooners will be included.

On Feb. 7, the Touchdown Club of Columbus, Ohio, will honor OU head coach Bob Stoops with the George Munger Award as the nation's top collegiate coach. Also at that function, Tommie Harris and White will be recognized.

The scene moves to Oklahoma City on Feb. 9 when Derrick Strait will receive formal presentation of the Jim Thorpe Award. The Thorpe Association also will honor all of Oklahoma's All-America players from the 2003 season.

Sooner Award Winners

From Feb. 12-14, the Walter Camp Foundation will hold its All-America weekend on the Yale campus in New Haven, Conn. Stoops will receive the Coach of the Year Award, while Mark Clayton, Tommie Harris, Teddy Lehman, Antonio Perkins, Strait and White all will be honored, as well.

White will fly directly from Connecticut to Fort Worth, Texas, to participate in the Davey O'Brien (top college quarterback) ceremony on Feb. 15-16. The event figures to draw a number of celebrities, including Terry Bradshaw, who will be honored with the Legends Award on the 25th anniversary of the Davey O'Brien Award.

On Feb. 29, White will be honored at the Oklahoma Headliners Banquet, a function that benefits the March of Dimes. White is the Oklahoma Headliner of the Year. On that same night, Lehman will be in Philadelphia to pick up the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player.
