Sooners Suffer First Loss Of 2004

No. 5 Notre Dame Too Much For Sooners

September 07, 2003 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma's soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss at the hands of fifth-ranked Notre Dame at the Notre Dame Classic in South Bend, Ind., on Sunday. The Sooners now drop to 2-2 on the season while Notre Dame remains unbeaten at 4-0.

The Irish jumped out on top early with two goals in the first 20 minutes of the contest with scores from Jen Buczkowski and Amanda Guertin.

At the 25:19 mark, OU's Becky Nelson put the Sooners on the board off a long pass from Lauren MacIver that put Nelson in a one-on-one position with Notre Dame's goalie, Erika Bohn. Nelson took advantage of the situation and narrowed the deficit to one goal with her second goal of the season.

Unfortunately for OU, the Irish offense continued to be aggressive and put two more goals in before halftime. After 45 minutes of action, the Irish led 4-1 and were outshooting the Sooners 19-2. Jen Buczkowski scored one of those goals giving her two in the game.

OU's goalie Catherine Wade had been stellar so far this season, but Sunday was a different story as she allowed four goals in the first half and stepped aside to give Keara Jones her first action of the year in net for the Sooners. Jones started the second half and had a solid performance allowing one goal and saving five Irish shots. That one goal came at the 84:12 mark as the Irish finished the game with a four goal advantage after Molly Iarocci's first goal of the season.

MacIver, Shelly Sims, Savannah Scott and Nelson registered a shot a piece in the loss for OU, as Notre Dame held a 27-4 advantage in shots taken.  In addition, Lauren MacIver was named to the all-tournament team at the Notre Dame Classic adding an assist to her season total and firing three shots over the weekend.

OU will return to action Friday with another preseason top 25 team, SMU. The two teams will take the field at 1 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas on Sept., 12. Then on Sunday, Sept., 14, OU will again play in Fort Worth, Texas against the Horned Frogs of TCU at 4:30 p.m.
