NORMAN, Okla. After going 1-1 last weekend against two top-25 teams that were picked to finish atop the Big 12 conference, the University of Oklahoma earned its first national ranking (No. 24) in the NSCAA/adidas National poll in school history.
OU is currently 6-3-1 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 action. Besides OU, three other Big 12 schools appear in the poll. Texas A&M remains at No. 3 with Nebraska and Colorado at 14th and 15th, respectively.
'I am really happy for this team because they have really worked hard to get where they are at,' said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. 'But we are not going to let this get to our heads and stop us from continuing to work hard towards having a great year.'
The Sooners are coming off a 2-1 victory over previously ranked Texas (No. 16) on Sunday at John Crain Field. The Longhorns (5-5) lost their ranking for the first time this year after suffering their first loss in Big 12 play to OU. UT was picked by the league's coaches as the preseason favorite to win the conference. OU lost to current No. 3 Texas A&M on Friday after holding a 1-0 halftime lead in Norman. The Aggies were picked to finish second in the Big 12.
In their only other contest against a top-25 opponent, the Crimson and Cream dropped a 5-1 decision to current No. 2 Notre Dame.
In addition to the national poll, the Sooners are also ranked fourth in the NSCAA/adidas Central Region poll, with Texas A&M at No. 1, followed by Colorado and Nebraska tied for second. After OU, Texas is tied at No. 5, Kansas follows at No. 9 and Oklahoma State is tied at No. 10.
The NSCAA/adidas rankings are conducted by a committee of member coaches throughout the country and are an indicator of the week-to-week status of qualified programs.
