Womack And Sooners Shock SMU, 2-1, In OT

NORMAN, Okla. Coming off a double-overtime tie to TCU on Saturday, the Oklahoma soccer team played another tough contest past regulation time on Sunday, and came away with a 2-1 victory at SMU.  The Mustangs were a preseason top-25 team in the NSCAA/adidas poll this season and received votes in the poll this week.

Logan Womack provided the game-winning goal five minutes into overtime, a header coming off the corner kick from Lauren MacIver.  The goal was Womack's third goal of the season and positioned the senior just one point behind Krissy Dawson for OU's all-time points record of 67.  MacIver's assist was her third of the season, a total that currently leads the Sooners.

The scoring got started at the 9:15 mark on another head ball from the Sooners, by Kristin Vesely.  Christy Kenkel set up Vesely nicely to give the sophomore her first collegiate goal.  That scoring play also gave Kenkel her first assist at OU, and her third point in the past two days, as she scored the game-tying goal against TCU on Saturday.

That early goal did not stop the Mustangs from getting back into the game.  They quickly countered just a minute later (10:17) on an unassisted goal from Jill Heinemann, as she put the ball past goalie Catherine Wade on a rebound.  However, from then on Wade took control, stopping six shots in the game.  SMU's offense amassed 20 shots on the contest.

The Sooners took 13 shots in the game and had the only two shots taken in the extra session.  OU played a solid overall game against a tough opponent and it comes off its second game in as many days.  OU also held the advantage in the corner kick category, 6-4.

With the thrilling overtime win, the Sooners improved to 3-2-1 on the season, while SMU fell to 5-2. OU will look to build on this weekend's success with home matches next weekend.  The Sooners will play against Oral Roberts on Friday and then Sunday versus Tulsa.
