NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma men's basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson announced today that his squad will travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, later this month to compete in exhibition games versus teams from Costa Rica and Panama.
The Sooners will depart Oklahoma City on Friday, Aug. 29 and play two games the following day and two more that Sunday.
"This is strictly a business trip," said Sampson today. "The NCAA lets you take a foreign exhibition trip once every four years and we haven't done one before. This trip will benefit this particular team. Not only do we have a bunch of newcomers, but we also have two players who redshirted last year in Jason Detrick and Larry Turner. I'm excited about the opportunity for a trip of this nature and the additional game experience it will provide."
The Sooners will hit the hardwood Aug. 25 for their first pre-trip full-squad workout.
Sampson's Sooners are coming off a 27-7 season that saw them win a third consecutive Big 12 Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight. In addition to Detrick and Turner, players returning from last year's roster include De'Angelo Alexander, Kevin Bookout, Jabahri Brown and Johnnie Gilbert. The Sooners also assembled a consensus top-five national recruiting class that will feature five scholarship players.
Dick Vitale's preseason national rankings list Oklahoma in the No. 12 slot.
