Oklahoma Soccer Tops Ole Miss 2-1 In Exhibition Match

In a final tune-up before the regular season kicks off this weekend, the OU soccer team triumphed 2-1 over SEC foe Ole Miss on Saturday, August 23 at Burns Park Soccer Complex in Little Rock, Ark.

"It was a great weekend for us overall,' said OU head coach Randy Evans.  "We wanted to play a quality opponent and Ole Miss is just that.  The Rebels have accomplished what we want to do here, with their berth in the NCAA tournament a year ago."

"With the hot and demanding temperatures (high 90s) during the game, it was good to see how we could hold up in those kind of conditions," continued Evans. "It also gave the team an opportunity to experience life on the road."

Senior forward Logan Womack got things started for the Sooners at the 22:05 mark to put OU up 1-0 in the first half.  The scoring opportunity was made possible off a quick counter from sophomore midfielder Lauren MacIver.  MacIver fed a great ball up front to Womack who beat the goalie on a one-on-one to the ball for the score.

Before the opening goal, OU conceded possession in the first 15 minutes of action.  But after taking the lead, possession went back and forth between the two teams.

The second half started with the Crimson and Cream on top 1-0, and the offense was not finished as it applied good pressure on the Rebels and consistently got behind their defensive front.  Sixteen minutes into the second session, sophomore midfielder Kristin Vesely took advantage of the situation and gave the Sooners an insurance goal, the eventual game winner.  The assist on the play came from freshman midfielder Andrea Hurley, who took a pass from down the flank and centered it for Vesely.

Ole Miss made things interesting at the 84:01 mark, putting themselves down a goal from 18 yards out.  The goal was not enough though, as OU closed the game giving junior goalkeeper Catherine Wade the win.  Wade recorded eight saves on the game.  The Rebels outshot the Sooners, 15-5, but OU came out on top by capitalizing on its scoring chances.

"The game was pretty even possession wise in the second half, but the difference in the game was our ability to use our offensive talent and depth to score goals when the chances were afforded to us," said Evans.

The Sooners will look to carry over the success against Ole Miss into this weekend's regular season home doubleheader, slating them up first against another SEC opponent, Arkansas.  That game will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at John Crain Field and will be followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday game against the University of New Mexico.
