Cody Captures Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Honors

November 03, 2003 | Football

Oklahoma defensive end Dan Cody, who had three sacks in the Sooners' 52-9 romp over No. 14 Oklahoma State, Saturday, has been named the SBC Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.  It marks the fourth time this season that an OU player has won the honor.  Derrick Strait is a two-time recipient, while Teddy Lehman received it once.

Cody had four tackles, all for losses and one fumble forced in addition to the three sacks, which were the most ever by a Sooner against Oklahoma State. His tackles for loss went for -24 yards, and his first sack resulted in a fumble by Cowboy quarterback Josh Fields. OU followed the turnover with a field goal and never trailed its intrastate rival.

The Oklahoma defense gave up essentially no points as the Cowboys' points resulted from an 11-yard TD interception return and a field goal after a turnover.  The Sooners also held OSU to 10 first downs (more than 12 below its average), 150 rushing yards (85.5 below its average) and 62 net passing yards (147 under its average).

Other weekly honors in the conference went to Texas running back Cedric Benson on offense and Texas Tech punt returner Wes Welker on special teams.

In total, OU players have been Big 12 player of the week seven times this season.
