Journal Entry No. 2 (Nov. 26, 2003)
It was real fun to finally get the chance to get out there with my team and play a real game. It's been a year so it was really fun. Especially this type of game and the way we won it in this atmosphere. It felt good to get out there and do some little moves.  I haven't done it in awhile in a game or even practice since I've been hurt. It just felt good to do a little move to get open because that's my game really -- going to the hole.  It just felt really good.

Jason, what made you choose OU and who do you room with?
- Rachel from Claremore, Okla.

I chose OU because it was the first major school to recruit me. They were there before I had a real good season so it was kind of a loyalty thing. They stuck with me from the beginning until the end. I room with Jabahri Brown. This is the first year we've roomed together. For the last two years, Johnnie Gilbert was my roommate.

What was the biggest thing you learned from sitting out last year (due to injury)?  Do you think it's benefited you as a player? How hard was it?
- Luke from Fayetteville, Ark.

I learned how to be a leader and how to be a better teammate. I learned leadership from Quannas (White) and Hollis (Price) and watched how they took care of their teammates. That was the biggest thing I learned. It wasn't that hard to sit out last year. It was an opportunity. I like college anyway so that was the real fun thing. I get another year to stay in school. It was real easy because the team was winning. It was tougher early this year because when you've had to sit out that long -- you're ready to go. Suffering an injury like I did made me think a little that maybe I should have tried to play last year but I just toughed it out.

Jason, my nine-year-old son is just starting to play organized basketball and is a huge Sooner fan. What is the most important skill he should learn at his age?
- Blake from Abingdon, Va.

The best skill you could learn is dribbling and shooting a layup. Because, if you can dribble and layup at that age, you can score a lot of points. That will give you a lot of confidence to do more stuff so those are the biggest things. If you can dribble down and get a layup -- that's an easy way to score.

How does Coach Sampson teach guys to be so tough in their style of play?
- JW from Blanchard, Okla.

He never lets you slack off. The things he emphasizes -- you've got to be tough: playing defense and rebounding.

Hi Jason. What are your individual goals for this year?
- Kino from Havre, Mt.

Hey, that's my brother Kino! My goal is to get drafted and be the No. 1 Detrick athlete in the family (laughs).  Kino was a football player.

Jason, what are some of the advantages to having younger guys on the team?
- Ashley from Tahlequah, Okla.

They have a lot of energy and there's always something new that they'll do. There's always something that they'll do that's funny and they'll keep you on your toes.

- #5 Jason Detrick
