Journal Entry No. 10 (Nov. 26, 2003)
I'm ready to answer some questions..
Hey Jammal, I am 10 years old and I'm one of your number one fans. I think you are really cool. I was wondering if you played football as a kid?
- Ali from Norman, Okla.
Hi Ali. I've played football since I was in first grade. I played a little quarterback and a little receiver. I was a lot thinner then. I played safety up to sixth grade. But soccer was my first love. I played center. I was real skinny and fast. As I realized that I was sorta good at football, I continued on with that.
Jammal, what has been your most memorable moment since playing at OU?
- Shalyone from Tulsa, Okla.
It was at the Orange Bowl when we won the National Championship. Seeing guys like Denzel Washington and Alex Rodriguez. Just seeing all the fireworks and you're real emotional. Florida State had a great tradition too and they were the team to beat at that time. Plus, didn't Celine Dion sing the national anthem? I'm a big Celine fan.
We hear frequently about your team's off-season conditioning. Can you tell us what a typical off-season conditioning session is like?
- Robert from Sapulpa, Okla.
You get up about 5:30 in the morning. You go to lift weights. We're in the weight room -- it's strictly business. We run a whole lot. I mean, a whole, whole lot. It's not fun but we know that's what we have to do to put us in the position we're in right now. That's something we don't look forward to but it's something that we know we have to get done.
Jammal, you mentioned in a previous journal entry that you might someday like to coach high school football. Where would you want to coach and what would your philosophy be for inspiring young players?
- Anne from Lawton, Okla.
I'd like to be maybe in Florida or Colorado. Maybe around Clearwater -- the Tampa area -- in Florida. I just think that's a nice place. On the Gulf side. To inspire my players, I'd want the team to know that hard work will get you to where you want to be. No one gets anywhere by half stepping or taking it easy. If you want it, you have to work hard enough to get it. That's a good message for life. If you want good grades, you have to work hard at it. If you want to win, you have to work hard in the off season. That's what I would teach my players. Hard work will take you to your success.
If one of my players got into trouble, I'd handle it by making them come in early and do stuff on our days off. He'd have to do work. He'll be up at 5:30 in the morning doing something.
Jammal, how do you keep yourself motivated to play at your top performance week after week?
- J.P. from Colorado Springs, Colo.
We just have to keep our eyes on our goal each week. That's enough to play at your top level. You're the No. 1 team in the country so everybody's gonna give you their best shot. So you have to be at your best. That's one thing I understand. You can always get better. I just try to go out each week and improve. People are gunning for us so you have to be at the top of your game.
Of all the offensive linemen, who eats the most?
- Bhala from Norman, Okla.
That would be Brett Rayl. I remember at the Cotton Bowl, he ate like nine steaks. Then, I think he ate 10 steaks at the Rose Bowl. He's a pretty big eater.
I'm headed out. See you all after Thanksgiving.
