NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma will be part of the field featuring 64 teams, which will compete for the 22nd Division I Women's Soccer Championship, as announced today by the Division I Women's Soccer Committee. It is OU's first ever bid into the NCAA post-season, currently playing its eighth season after starting play back in 1996.
The Sooners will take on Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday, November 14 at 8 p.m. EST. The Volunteers are 15-4-2 and are ranked No. 7 in the latest NSCAA/adidas Top-25 poll.
“Obviously I am thrilled about the bid,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “This was a goal of ours and its nice to be rewarded for a tough schedule, our only losses this season came to teams that qualified for the tourney.”
OU finished the regular season with an 8-5-5 overall mark, and a 3-3-4 record in the Big 12. The Sooners suffered a heart breaking loss in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament to Kansas (1-0) and it appeared that the 2003 season was finished. However, the conference tournament was filled with shockers as Oklahoma State (No. 7 seed) defeated Missouri (No. 8) in the championship match. As a result, eight teams from the Big 12 were named to the field of 64 today, the most by any conference in Division I (Oklahoma State: automatic bid, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Texas A&M: at-large bids). The ACC landed seven teams and the Big East and Big 10 each placed six teams in the field.
The Sooners six losses this season came to teams that will begin play in the NCAA tournament this weekend. They are as follows: Rutgers, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Kansas twice.
For two weeks this season, OU was ranked in the top-25 (9/29-10/13) after knocking off then-No.16 Texas on Sept. 28. The Sooners were as high as No. 18 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 25 in the Soccer Buzz Magazine poll. Tennessee is celebrating its highest ranking (No. 7) of the season after defeating Florida (No. 8) in the SEC Championship in penalty kicks.
The winner of the Oklahoma vs. Tennessee match will take on the winner of the Clemson vs. Georgia game, which will be played prior to the OU game in Knoxville, Tenn., at 5:30 p.m. The second round game will be played on Sunday November 16 at 2 p.m.
