Soccer Battles Iowa State To Double Overtime Tie

The Sooners took their No. 24 ranking to Ames, Iowa, on Friday night at ISU Soccer Complex and ended up tied at two after two overtime sessions with the Cyclones. Jessica Talton and Heidi Martinson propelled the OU offense to two scores.

The teams played a scoreless first half in which OU had opportunities via the corner kick with five. The Cylones had just one corner kick in the first 45 minutes but outshot OU 10-8.

Senior midfielder Jessica Talton broke the scoreless tie, unassisted, in the 56th minute with her third goal of the season. However, Iowa State quickly countered minutes later as the Cyclones' Erin McDowell scored her first goal of the year at the 59:49 mark.

The Cyclones' offense continued to pressure the OU defense and got past goalie Catherine Wade at the 67:02 mark. Kate Kirwan scored an unassisted goal to put ISU up 2-1.

The Sooners kept themselves in the game, as Heidi Martinson scored her first goal this season. On an assist from Logan Womack, Martinson beat ISU's Beth Chapman for the game-tying tally. That is how regulation ended, as ISU outshot the Sooners 22-14 in 90 minutes of action.

That forced the fourth overtime game of the season for OU and previously the Sooners were 2-0-1 in extra sessions. That perfect mark stayed unblemished as the Sooners preserved a 2-2 tie. The Crimson and Cream managed three shots to ISU's five in the extra periods.

Wade finished the game with 12 saves and her counterpart collected eight. Sophomore midfielder Lauren MacIver led OU in shots with five, as Becky Nelson and Savannah Scott each fired three.

OU is now 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Big 12 play while Iowa State is 3-4-3 (0-2-1). The Sooners finish up the weekend on Sunday in Columbia, Mo., at 1 p.m. against Big 12 foe, Missouri.
