NORMAN, Okla. - After two consecutive Big 12 wins, Oklahoma soccer
steps out of conference to host the TCU Horned Frogs Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
at John Crain Field. OU then travels to Ames, Iowa to battle the Cyclones of Iowa
State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Sooners (8-2-0, 2-0-0 Big 12) came from behind to beat Baylor, 4-2, on Friday
night and blanked Texas Tech, 4-0, on Sunday to open Big 12 Conference play.
Oklahoma recorded the first hat trick in the program's history when preseason
All-Big 12 forward Logan Womack iced the Baylor game with three goals. Womack,
a junior from Norman, Okla., is now tied with former Sooner Jonette Coquat for
the OU career goals scored record at 26.
Senior Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.) also contributed three goals this weekend
with her score against Baylor and two against Tech while freshman Lauren MacIver
(Tulsa, Okla.) wrapped up the scoring for the Sooners with two goals against the
Red Raiders.
OU has six shutouts in 10 games this season and boasts a six game winning streak
at John Crain Field dating back to last season. Over the past two seasons, OU
is 12-1-1 (.893) at home and 17-5-2 (.750) over the past three.
Several activities are planned for Sooner soccer fans Friday evening to enjoy
before and after the game. The first 250 fans through the gates will receive their
very own OU foam noodle. At halftime, the OU men's gymnastics team will be doing
an exhibition and the Sooners will honor the Norman Youth Soccer League Team of
the Game.
From 2:00-9:00 p.m., POWERade Interactive Games will be available at the Lloyd
Noble Parking Lot just east of John Crain Field.
Previewing TCU
TCU (2-6-3, 1-2-1) picked up its first Conference USA victory of the season on
Sept. 29, claiming a road match against the Louisville Cardinals. A trio of newcomers
gave the Horned Frogs the 2-1 win, which snapped TCU's seven-game winless streak.
The Horned Frogs dropped a 3-0 decision at Cincinnati on Sept. 27. Three goalkeepers
combined in Cincinnati's shutout, and the Horned Frogs were only able to attempt
three shots on the night.
TCU will play at home against crosstown rival SMU on Wednesday, Oct. 2 before
arriving in Norman to play the Sooners Friday night. Oklahoma leads the overall
series with TCU, 3-2, and is riding a two-game win streak. In the last meeting,
OU defeated TCU, 2-0, in Fort Worth on Sept. 2, 2001. The two teams have met every
year since 1997.
Previewing Iowa State
The Cyclones (3-5-1, 0-2-0 Big 12) lost to No. 4 Texas, 7-0, and No. 7 Texas A&M,
4-2, over the weekend. Iowa State hosts the Oklahoma schools this weekend with
OSU playing in Ames on Friday night and the Sooners playing on Sunday afternoon.
Iowa State leads the overall series with OU, 4-1-1, and the teams battled
to a scoreless tie in the last meeting on October 19, 2001 in Norman. Oklahoma
has never defeated Iowa State in Ames. The Cyclones finished 5-11 last season
(3-5 Big 12) and lost to No. 1 seeded-Texas in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament,
6-nil.
Hat Trick
Junior forward Logan Womack recorded the first hat trick in Oklahoma soccer history
with her three scores against Big 12 rival Baylor on Friday night. The Sooners
overpowered the Bears, 4-2. Her final score moved Womack in to a tie with former
Sooner great Jonette Coquat for the all-time OU career goals scored record at
26. Womack has seven goals on 31 shots this season.
Dawson's Peak
Senior forward Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.) moved into second place on the career
assists chart with 10. She passed Heather Morrison (9) with an assist against
Texas Tech on Sept. 29. Former Sooner Jonette Coquat leads in the category with
15 career assists from 1998-2001.
Mac Attack
Freshman Lauren MacIver (Tulsa, Okla.) leads all newcomers at Oklahoma with eight
points for the Sooners this season (three goals, two assists). MacIver scored
twice against Big 12 rival Texas Tech on Sunday for her first multiple goal game
at OU. MacIver has started all 10 games for the Sooners and ranks third on the
team in goals scored (25 shots with nine on goal). She was Oklahoma's High School
Player of the Year in 2001 at powerhouse Jenks HS.
Wingin' It
Senior Shannon Wing (Broken Arrow, Okla.) has ten starts in ten games this season
extending her streak to 67 straight starts for OU over the past four seasons.
Wing has 26 shots and two goals for the Sooners in 2002 and 155 shots and 12 goals
for her career.
Tough Schedule
Oklahoma's 2002 schedule includes six teams currently ranked in the NSCAA/adidas
Top 25 poll. OU dispatched No. 18 SMU, 1-0, on Sept. 13. The Sooners lost games
to No. 2 Stanford on Sept. 20 and defending national champion and No. 10-ranked
Santa Clara on Sept. 22. Big 12 rivals Texas (No. 4), Texas A&M (No. 8) and Nebraska
(No. 15) are the ranked teams remaining for OU.
