Final Stats

NORMAN, Okla.- The Oklahoma volleyball team won its second game of the season by dominating Louisiana Monroe in straight games, 30-19, 30-12, 30-18 inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center. With the win OU improves to 2-5 and the Lady Indians drops to 2-7. The Sooners will play in the Ewing Grover Olds/GMC Invitational championship game tonight at 7p.m. against host Tulsa. The match will mark OU's first tournament final appearance since 2000 when the Sooners won the Cardinal Classic (Beaurmont, Texas).

"We played aggresively and never let them get into their offense,' said Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We served agressively and consistently, which made them (ULM) stop passing and led to a predictable offense on their behalf. Once that began we took advantage defensively and really started clicking as a team."

OU set a few records last night against an outmanned Grambling State team. Today they improved those records. The Lady Indians only mustered 12 points in game two and 49 in the match, both opponent lows for the Coach Mahi tenure under the current scoring system (rally scoring).

Senior Megan O'Connel put away 14 kills, an OU career-high and team season-high. Her hitting percentage of .619 (14K-1E-21TA) was also good enough for personal and team highs. Junior Christina Barlow had seven kills and no errors for a solid .583 (7-0-12) hitting percentage. Oklahoma hit a season-best .278 (41-14-97) as a team, another season high. For the second consecutive match senior Denise Griffin led OU in digs with 11.

Oklahoma has a 30-0 all-time record against Tulsa. Tulsa comes into the match at 9-1, coming off similar victories against Grambling State and ULM.

"Tulsa will be the best team we have faced so far in this tournament," said Mahi. "It is a team we should beat, but we have to keep the unforced errors low and play to our potential."

Oklahoma opens Big 12 play Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7p.m. against Iowa State in the Howard McCasland Field House. The Big 12 opener also marks Oklahoma Volleyball "Hawaiian Night", fans dressed in the best island attire will win free prizes.
