Baylor
Sunday's game marked the first multiple-goal game of Candace Reilly's career.
Baylor has outshot its opponents in each game this season; in four matches, the
Bears have outshot the opposition 86-24. At 4-0, the Bears are off to their best
start since opening the 1998 season 5-0. That season, the Bears went on to claim
their first Big 12 title. The 1996 squad also opened the year 5-0.
Colorado
When senior Tiffany Booth scored her second career winning goal in what would
be a 1-0 win over Wyoming on Friday, it marked the first time since the program's
inception that the Buffs kicked off the season 2-0, and combined with a 3-0 win
over Fresno State in the season opener, marked the first back-to-back shutouts
in the program's seven years. On Sunday the Buffs fell on the short end of a 3-2
decision at Minnesota, and are now 2-1 to start the season, mirroring the 1999
team's start. In Sunday's loss senior Lindsey Galas recorded her third score of
the season, her most productive to date. Iowa transfer sophomore Nicholle Taylor,
who had been in on a pair of assists in CU's first two contests, scored her first
goal for CU late in the second half at Minnesota.
Iowa State
Iowa State's 3-0 start was the best in school history and the Cyclones' longest
winning streak since a three-game span Oct. 13-20, 2000. Rebecca Hornbacher's
3-1 record is the best four-game start by a first-year Cyclone head coach (Cathy
Klein was 2-2 in 1996 and Stephanie Gabbert was 2-1-1 in 2000). ISU has 7 goals
and 59 shots through 4 games this season, compared to 1 goal and 35 shots through
4 games in 2001.
Kansas
The Jayhawks' six goals scored this season have come from a freshman (Caroline
Smith, 2) and two sophomores (Monica Brothers, 2 and Rachel Gilfillan, 2). Although
yet to shutout an opponent this season, sophomore goal keeper Meghan Miller has
a 1.13 GAA, which is lower than her 1.40 average as a freshman when she had four
shoutouts. Monica Brothers' game winning goal against Mississippi State moves
her up to second all-time at KU with four career game winners. Brothers is now
in sole possession of fourth place among KU's all-time leading goal scorers. With
her goal against MSU Gilfillan moves up to fifth place on the Jayhawks' all-time
goals list. Kansas last played both Arkansas and Tulsa back in 1987. KU has never
beaten Arkansas or Tulsa. Against the Razorbacks, Kansas is 0-1-1, and against
the Golden Hurricane, 0-3.
Missouri
The Tigers are 2-1-1 with two wins and one tie over ranked opponents. Missouri
defeated then No. 23 ranked Illinois last weekend before claiming a victory over
#23 ranked Miami 1-0 and tying #10 Florida State 2-2. Missouri opened the 2002
season playing three consecutive double overtime games. The Tigers won the Florida
State invitational taking a win over Miami and tying the Seminoles. Missouri's
1-0-1 record in the tournament beat out LSU, FSU and Miami which all rounded out
the weekend with a loss.
Nebraska
Nebraska (2-1-1) defeated Belmont on Friday night, 7-0, with all four seniors
scoring in the game. Christine Latham, Kori Saunders, Breanna Boyd, and Leah Lamale
all pitched in goals, as well as two freshmen, Vern Fitzgerald and Aly Scace.
Sophomore Iman Haynes added her second goal of her career as well against the
Bruins. The Huskers traveled to Gainesville, Fla. on Sunday, where they fell to
Florida, 1-0. Latham led the Huskers against Florida with three shots, including
two shots on goal. Erin Miller held the Gators to one goal, and snagged four saves.
This week, Nebraska travels to Portland to take on the Pilots Saturday afternoon.
Oklahoma State
out-shot its opponents 35-7 and did not allow ULL to take a single shot in the
first period on Friday. Freshman Cassie Lewis scored a goal in each contest, including
the game winner against SFA. OSU's leading scorer last season, sophomore Jolene
Schweitzer, found the back of the net twice in the first seven minutes of the
second stanza against SFA, scoring the first goal 16 seconds into the period.
Two Cowgirls, Nikki Wojtowicz and Krista Dedmon, had multi-assist games. Wojtowicz
had both assists in the ULL contest and Dedmon picked up a pair against SFA.
Texas
UT is in the midst of a stretch where it plays four consecutive top 25 opponents
(No. 21 Duke, No. 11 California, No. 3 Stanford & No. 1 North Carolina). The Longhorns'
1-0 loss to No. 3 Stanford marked UT's first road loss in its last eight road
contests dating back to the 2001 season. Texas' defense has allowed only three
goals through four matches this season. Sophomore forward Kelly Wilson made her
2002 debut for the Longhorns against No. 11 Cal after playing with the U.S. Under-19
National Team and scored both UT goals in a 2-1 victory to notch her third career
multiple-goal effort. Kelly Wilson has now scored at least one goal in 12 of her
22 career games and recorded at least one point in 15 of her 22 career tilts.
Texas A&M
The 1-0 loss to Stanford snapped A&M's 24-game streak of not being shutout. The
Aggies had been shutout just once since the 2000 season until suffering back-to-back
shutouts last weekend. The Aggies outshot California, 10-6, but lost the match,1-0,
on an own goal. Friday's game against No. 1 North Carolina will be the fourth-straight
nationally-ranked opponent for the Aggies. They defeated No. 9 SMU, 2-1, before
dropping 1-0 decisions to No. 2 Stanford and No. 11 California.
Texas Tech
With the loss to Southwest Texas State, Tech's all time record in home openers
drops to 4-5. The team has dropped its last three opening home games. Freshman
Beth Lippert made the first start of her colligiate career, surrendering one goal,
and making five saves. The meeting with Southwest Texas State was the first in
the history of Tech's soccer program.
