NORMAN, Okla. - Students don't generally get too excited about the start of school each fall. But if you're a University of Oklahoma student-athlete who has been practicing twice a day for the last two weeks, school is a welcomed site.
"I never thought I would be this excited about the start of school, " said freshman outside hitter Jennifer Adams. "The practices have been very productive and we've improved dramatically, but I am ready for a more normal routine."
The Sooners began fall practrice on Aug. 9 and will complete the preseason practice schedule this Saturday at 4 p.m. with an intrasquad scrimmage at the McCasland Field House.
"Every thing has gone well, I am pleased with the progress of the team", said Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We have a couple players banged up but that is a common occurance when you're practicing this much."
The volleyball team has the day off on Sunday, followed by the beginning of regular season practices on Monday. Oklahoma opens its 2002 schedule on Friday, Aug. 30 as one of the four teams competing in the two-day Loyola Marymount University Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif. The Sooners will face Duke on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by matches against LMU and Bradley on Saturday at noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
"Surprisingly, it hasn't been too tough for this team to adjust with the (seven) newcomers. It really was a non-factor because everyone prepared during the off season and was in good shape at the beginning of camp, we are almost ready to play," said senior setter Jessica Barney. "I expect to make the (NCAA) tournament this year and I think if we get challenged early and succeed (in the LMU Invitational) it will breed confidence in us."
