Norman, Okla. - Saint Louis won a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma in an exhibition
soccer match at John Crain Field on Friday evening. Both teams battled the heat
with the temperature at kickoff pushing 100 degrees.
An unassisted shot by the Billikens' Anny Lucier got by Sooner goalkeeper Catherine
Wade at 16:05 in the first half for the initial Billiken score. Saint Louis tacked
on another goal in the waning seconds of the game when Christie Cigno scored off
a feed from Jenny Kehl at 89:42.
Saint Louis built a 10-4 shot advantage over OU in the first period but the Sooners
surged back in the second with nine shots to four. The Billikens finished with
14 shots edging the Sooners' 13.
Both coaches substituted freely in the exhibition match in an attempt to evaluate
as many players as possible in live action.
"We played a lot of people," said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. "It was an
opportunity to see who can compete at this level and who can't. We learned a lot
from this game. The score doesn't really matter."
Oklahoma opens the 2002 regular season against Tulsa at the ORU Soccer Complex
on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. The Sooners host SMU on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30
p.m. in their home opener at John Crain Field.
