NORMAN, Okla. - Head coach Randy
Evans gets his first chance to evaluate the 2002 edition of OU soccer in live
action on Friday evening. The Sooners host Saint Louis at 5 p.m. on Aug. 23 in
an exhibition match at John Crain Field on the OU campus.
Evans welcomes back nine starters and 16 letterwinners from his 2001 squad which
set a school record with 11 wins and earned OU's second consecutive trip to the
Big 12 Tournament.
This fall, OU is led by an experienced group of seniors including forward Krissy
Dawson, midfielders Heather
Martinelli, Shannon
Wing and Jennifer
Enos and defender Brittany
Davis.
First-team All-Big 12 forward Logan
Womack, a junior, will key the Sooner attack. Sophomore Catherine
Wade returns to the box after turning in one of the best goalkeeping seasons
in school history in 2001.
The Sooners were recently tabbed to finish fourth in the annual preseason Big
12 coaches' poll behind Texas A&M, Texas and Nebraska. Womack was selected to
the preseason first-team All-Big 12 team after a stellar sophomore campaign last
year.
Saint Louis finished second in the Conference USA standings last year with an
8-10-1 record. The Billikens return nine starters for head coach Tim Champion
to a team that also includes nine seniors.
Headlining the senior class are goalkeeper Meghann Burke and midfielder Jenny
Kehl. Both have been NSCAA All-Region selections in their careers and look to
spearhead a resurgence after a disappointing junior campaign.
Gates open at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at John Crain Field and admission is free to
the exhibition match.
The Sooners open the 2002 regular season at Tulsa on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m.
The game will be played at the ORU Soccer Complex on the campus of Oral Roberts.
OU plays its first home game on Friday, Sept. 13 against SMU.
