NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma was one of three universities to have two student-athletes named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VI At-Large Team. OU placed senior David Johnston of the men's gymnastics and men's tennis player Chris Mitchell, a junior, on the all-district squad. Oklahoma State and Texas A&M also had two student-athletes named to the 10-member team.
Johnston, a member of the men's gymnastics 2002 National Championship team, earned All-America honors at nationals and a share of the school record with a 9.900 on the rings. He also posted a career-high 9.600 on the rings at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships to tie for fourth place. In addition, the three-time Academic All-American was named Oklahoma's Conference Medal Award Winner for his display of both academic and athletic excellence.
Mitchell ended the 2002 season tied for the team's most singles wins with 19 (19-12) and topped the squad with 17 doubles victories (17-9). He is a three-year letterwinner who is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection. Mitchell was also named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll this year.
Both student-athletes will now be placed on the national ballot for academic All-America honors.
To qualify, an individual needs to be nominated by a school's sports information office and have a 3.20 GPA while either serving as a starter or as a significant reserve. The student-athlete must also be at least a sophomore in eligibility and have completed at least one year at the institution.
