NORMAN, Okla. - Former University of Oklahoma basketball standout Alvan Adams has been selected as one of 25 finalists for induction into the 15th annual Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame. Four of the 25 finalists will be inducted at ceremonies in New York City on June 27.
While playing at the University of Oklahoma from 1972-1975, Adams achieved new heights and is credited with the rebirth of Oklahoma basketball. In 1975, Adams was named Big Eight Player of the Year, was voted a consensus All-American and earned Academic All-America honors. He still holds Oklahoma school records for rebound average in a career (12.8), rebound average in a season (13.3) and field goal percentage in a game (11-of-11). Adams was drafted by the Phoenix Suns, was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1976 and led the Suns to the championship series the same year. Adams ended his career with the Suns after 13 years and left as the franchise's all-time leading scorer with 13,910 points.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing surface.
Established in 1988, the Hall of Fame honors former college student-athletes who have excelled in their professions and have made substantial contributions to their communities.
The Hall of Fame finalists were chosen from a group of more than 150 nominees and were selected by a 90-member voting board representing CoSIDA's 1,800 members. CBS broadcaster Dick Enberg, the spokesman for the Verizon Academic All-America program, will serve as master of ceremonies at this year's 15th annual induction. There are currently 68 members in the Hall of Fame.
