NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma football team closed out its first week of spring practice with a solid third day of practice Thursday afternoon on the OU practice fields. In its second day of working out in full pads, Head Coach Bob Stoops continued to be impressed with the team's overall attitude and toughness during the early days of spring drills. The progress of the offense, which ran a balanced mix of running and passing plays during a mimi scrimmage, highlighted Stoops' post-practice comments.
"Our offense is looking awfully good. I'm excited about that," Stoops expressed. "Will (Peoples) is looking good and Brandon Jones had a better day and is looking awfully good."
"I'm real excited looking at our running game. We've got a lot more attitude and a much better attitude coming off the ball and we're making some things happen -- I think its really going to help us."
Through the first three days, Coach Stoops remains pleased with the way the trio of quarterbacks are performing. Jason White continues to practice well following knee surgery back in the fall and is free to participate in all spring drills, but will be held out of contact scrimmages later in the spring for precautionary reasons.
"He's throwing the ball well and doing everything well and the other guys are looking good, too. Jason has looked exceptionally well, there's no question about it."
On defense, Stoops discussed the competition at the middle linebacker position, which has a lot of talented depth with redshirt freshman Clint Ingram and junior college newcomer Lance Mitchell.
"Clint Ingram and Lance Mitchell are trying to solidify that middle linebacker spot. They're cutting it. We've got a lot in and they're doing an awful lot, but they're getting it little by little."
Stoops also made a special mention of the Sooners' new punter Blake Ferguson. Ferguson, who is the younger brother of Jeff Ferguson (last year's All-American punter for Oklahoma), was one of two punters to work in the punting drills that the team practiced extensively at the beginning of Thursday's workouts. Ferguson worked out with the team in the fall after transferring from North Carolina and, in Stoops' opinion, is expected to be a solid punter for the team next year.
The Sooners will take the weekend off and return to the fields on Tuesday afternoon.
