NORMAN, Okla. - The National Association of Basketball Coaches announced today that University of Oklahoma men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson has been named the organization's NCAA Division I coach of the year.
Sampson has directed Oklahoma to a 31-4 record this season and to its first Final Four appearance since 1988. The Sooners posted a 13-3 conference record, good for second place, and won the league's postseason tournament for the second straight season. OU is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in both major polls.
Sampson will receive the award Sunday evening at the annual NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show at the Atlanta Hilton Hotel Grand Ballroom. The awards show is held as part of the annual NABC convention in conjunction with the Final Four.
The national honor is the second for Sampson this season, who has also been named the Chevrolet Coach of the Year. The Chevrolet award is voted on by CBS Sports production staff and talent.
Sampson also won three national coach-of-the-year honors in 1995, his first year at Oklahoma, from the Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association and Basketball Weekly.
Oklahoma meets Indiana in a national semifinal game at 5:07 p.m. CST on Saturday. Monday's national championship game is set for 8:18 p.m. CST.
