NCAA Tournament (First and Second Round)
American Airlines Center w Dallas, Texas w March 15, 2002
No. 15 Illinois-Chicago (20-14, 8-8) vs. No. 2 Oklahoma (28-4, 13-3)

  • OU is now 25-20 in NCAA Tournament games, but today's win marks the first time the Sooners have won as a No. 2 seed. In the Sooners' only other appearance as a No. 2 seed, they fell to Dayton, 89-85, in 1984.

  • The Sooners' 28 wins are the most by an OU squad since the 1988-89 season (30-6). OU's 28 victories are the fifth-most in school history and the most in the Kelvin Sampson era.

  • The Sooners' 47 rebounds rank second on the OU all-time postseason chart.

  • The Sooners placed four players in double figures for the 14th time this season. Aaron McGhee (26), Hollis Price (17), Daryan Selvy (13) and Ebi Ere (10) all hit double digits. McGhee's 26 points were just one off his season-high 27 (vs. Oklahoma State).

  • Illinois-Chicago entered today's game among the nation's best in three point field-goal percentage. The Flames, who ranked sixth in the nation (41.2 percent) entering the tournament, were held to just 22.7 percent (5 of 22) from beyond the arc. Additionally, UIC's top threat, Jordan Kardos, hit on only one his four attempts. Kardos was tied for second in the nation at 47.9 percent prior to the NCAA Tournament.

  • UIC held OU to an opponent season-low 11.1 percent (2 of 18) shooting from three-point land. It also marked a season-low shooting for the Sooners from beyond the arc.

  • The Flames turned the ball over just nine times. It marked the eighth time this season, including four of the last six contests, that UIC posted single-digits in turnovers. The eight turnovers were the second-fewest (and the fewest in a victory) forced by an OU team that entered the tournament forcing more than 16 turnovers per game.

  • Daryan Selvy opened the contest by connecting on his first four shots from the floor. He accounted for the first nine points in an OU 11-0 run from the 10:11 to the 6:32 mark of the first half. Selvy, who scored 13 points, was coming off of a stretch that saw him score just 11 points in three games in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

  • Aaron McGhee posted 26 points and 12 rebounds. McGhee has now registered 13 double-doubles on the season, including nine in his last 14 games. After scoring 20 or more in six of his previous eight contests, McGhee averaged just 10.7 points in three Big 12 Tournament games. McGhee, who scored over 20 points eight times last season, has gone over 20 in 18 of his 65 career games at OU. McGhee is the only player to start all 32 games for the Sooners this season.

  • Aaron McGhee's 12 boards are tied for 11th on the OU all-time postseason list.

  • Hollis Price, who scored 17 points, has posted double figures in 18 of the last 21 games. After scoring seven points in OU's semifinal win over Texas in the Big 12 Tournament, Price has scored 40 points in the last two games and connected on 15 of his 33 field-goal attempts.
  • Quannas White, who dished out six assists and turned the ball over just one time today, has posted 64 assists and 22 turnovers in his last 12 games (assist-to-turnover ratio = 2.91-to-1). White has led OU in assists in 16 of the last 17 games.

  • Cedric Banks and Jordan Kardos, UIC's top two scorers, were held to a combined 17 points. The duo combined for 26.5 points per game on the season. In fact, Banks, who scored 11 points, averaged 19.7 points in his previous six outings. Kardos, meanwhile, scored six points and ended his career with 1,114 points, good for 12th on the UIC career list.

  • Cory Little, who scored 11 points, led the Flames in scoring for the first time this season. He was joined in the team lead with Cedrick Banks and Martell Bailey who also posted 11 points.

  • A 6.9 point-per-game scorer on the season, Martell Bailey (11 points) has posted double figures in seven of his last nine games, after scoring in double digits in only two of his first 24 contests.
