OKLAHOMA UPDATE
Oklahoma claimed two victories last week to improve its winning streak to four games. The Sooners, who appear fourth and fifth in the latest College RPI and Sagarin ratings, clipped Baylor 70-57 at home on Wednesday and edged Texas A&M 68-64 on the road Saturday. With six games left in the Big 12 regular season, OU trails first-place Kansas (11-0) by two-and-a-half games and leads third-place Texas (7-4) by one-and-a-half games. Oklahoma is 30-18 in its last 48 true road games and has won two straight away from home. OU is 5-3 on the road this year with wins over Arkansas, Connecticut, Nebraska, Texas and Texas A&M and losses at Michigan State, Kansas and Texas Tech.

Junior guard Hollis Price leads the team in scoring with his 17.2 points per contest, although he has averaged 9.0 points over the last two games. Last week's Big 12 Player of the Week, Price also averages 2.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals on the season. He has drained a team-high 50 treys (2.4 per game) and is shooting .502 from the field, .424 from beyond the arc and .852 from the foul line.

Ebi Ere, the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year and three-time league rookie of the week, averages 15.1 points per game but has fallen off lately by averaging 10.7 points over the last six contests. The junior guard has averaged 7.5 points the last two outings. Ere ranks third on the squad with 5.7 rebounds and with 1.6 assists on the year. He is shooting .342 from long range and owns a .789 free throw percentage, although he is shooting just .656 from the foul line in league games.

Senior forward Aaron McGhee has probably been the squad's hottest player recently and is averaging 14.2 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds per contest. He is coming off 23- and 21-point games versus Baylor and Texas A&M last week. McGhee has four double-doubles in the last eight games and is averaging 17.0 points and 9.7 boards over the last six outings. He averages 8.0 boards in league play.

Junior point guard Quannas White has upped his production over the last seven games, averaging 10.7 points, 4.0 boards, 5.6 assists and 1.6 steals during the stretch. On Saturday at Texas A&M, he posted his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 assists. He also had just one turnover.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE
After starting the season with 13 straight wins, Oklahoma State has fallen on tough times by posting a 5-6 record since. The Cowboys are tied with Texas Tech for fifth place in the Big 12 at 5-5 and are coming off a 58-52 non-conference defeat at Fresno State on Sunday. OSU's leading scorer on the year, Maurice Baker, sustained a sprained ankle in the team's come-from-behind win against Texas Tech last Wednesday and did not make the trip to Fresno State. Oklahoma State, which owns a 10-2 mark at home (3-2 in Big 12 play), is 20th in the College RPI and 23rd in the Sagaring ratings.

Baker, a senior guard who was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, leads OSU with his 15.7 points per game and also averages 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists per outing. He averages a team-high 1.8 treys per game and shoots .389 from long range and .853 from the free throw line. Junior point guard Victor Williams ranks second with his 12.3 points per contest and leads the team with 3.8 assists. Senior forward Fredrik Jonzen averages 11.7 points and 7.2 rebounds while sophomore forward Ivan McFarlin averages 10.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. OSU shoots .445 from the field, .329 from beyond the arc and .644 from the foul line. The Cowboys outrebound their foes by 8.2 per game.

In his 12th season at Oklahoma State, head coach Eddie Sutton is 269-109 (.712). He is in his 32nd year as a Division I head coach and owns a 697-275 (.717) record. He ranks 14th in Division I career wins.

SERIES WITH OKLAHOMA STATE
Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Oklahoma State, 117-82, but the Cowboys lead 52-40 in Stillwater. The Sooners are 8-9 against OSU under head coach Kelvin Sampson and own a 2-5 mark under the eighth-year mentor inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. OU has won two of the last three in Stillwater (54-43 in 1999 and 59-56 in 2000). Last year OSU posted a 72-44 home win over the Sooners.

EARLIER THIS YEAR VS. THE COWBOYS
After building a 16-point first-half advantage and leading by 12 at halftime, OU withstood a second-half Oklahoma State rally and held on for a 58-53 win Jan. 30 in Norman. The Sooners used a terrific defensive effort in the first half, limiting the Cowboys to 7-for-21 shooting, to take a 29-17 lead to the locker room. OSU's Cheyne Gadson, who scored the last four points of the first half, hit a trey to open the second half and triggered the Cowboys' run. OU point guard Quannas White picked up his fourth foul at the 15:51 mark and Oklahoma State went on a 15-8 spurt to trim the lead to two with White on the bench. OSU tied the game and went ahead twice by a single point, but six points by Hollis Price in the final 5:38 and inspired play by Aaron McGhee down low proved to be the difference. Price led the Sooners with a game-high 17 points while Ebi Ere added 12. McGhee notched his fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gadson scored 14 points for OSU and Victor Williams added 12. OSU's top two scorers entering the game, Maurice Baker (6) and Fredrik Jonzen (8) combined for 14 points.

TEXAS A&M RECAP
Oklahoma received double-doubles from two players in the same game for the first time this season and survived Texas A&M 68-64 in College Station on Saturday. Aaron McGhee registered 21 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year while Quannas White posted 12 points and a career-high 12 assists for his first career double-double. The Sooners fell behind 9-4 but recovered to take a 36-30 halftime lead as they made all 12 of their first-half free throws. OU extended its lead to 12 twice in the early stages of the second half and still led by 11 at the 7:34 mark. A couple of Larry Scott treys helped the Aggies reduce the margin to three points but solid free throw shooting kept OU ahead. In addition to double-digit point totals by McGhee and White, Hollis Price chipped in with 12 points. A&M's Nick Anderson produced 19 points and eight boards while Bernard King posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Sooners shot .469 from the field and .826 from the foul line while the Aggies posted .400 and .607 figures.

TEXAS A&M LEFTOVERS

  • What made Quannas White's career-high 12 assists even more impressive was his just one turnover.
  • Ebi Ere was held to single-digit scoring in back-to-back games for the first time this year. Ere scored eight points against the Aggies after a seven-point effort against Baylor on Wednesday.
  • OU improved to 60-9 (.870) under Sampson in games against teams from the state of Texas.

    ROAD RULE
Oklahoma has had its share of success on the road under Kelvin Sampson with a 30-18 (.625) record in its last 48 true away contests. In Big 12 play, OU is 26-13 in its last 39 road contests for a .667 mark. The Sooners have finished 5-3 in three of the last four seasons in conference road play and went 6-2 in 1998-99. Kansas (34-12), Oklahoma (27-18) and Texas (25-20) are the only schools with a winning road record since the Big 12 was formed.

    TRAVELING TIDBITS

  • Hollis Price has made 26-of-28 free throws on the road for a .929 mark.
  • Ebi Ere averages 2.1 treys per game on the road compared to 1.3 at Lloyd Noble Center.
  • OU has made 12 more three-pointers in eight road games than its home counterparts.

    OU VS. RANKED TEAMS
The Sooners are 2-1 this year against teams currently ranked in the top-25 polls and are 5-2 against teams who were in the top 25 at one time or another. Oklahoma is 2-2 against teams ranked in the AP top 25 at gametime. In his eighth year at OU, Kelvin Sampson is 25-27 against AP top-25 teams.

    SOONER STREAKERS
OU's win against Texas A&M on Saturday marked its sixth straight against the Aggies. The Sooners have also won 15 straight over Baylor, eight in a row versus Missouri and six straight against Texas. Oklahoma also owns a three-game winning streak against Nebraska and two-game streaks against Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

    LIFTING THE LID
Oklahoma shot .387 and .323 from the field in its first two games of the year, but has shot better than .400 in 19 of 20 games since. The Sooners have shot at least .417 in their last nine games and rank second in the Big 12 with their .464 season mark. OU also ranks second in league games with a .462 figure.

    A CHARITY CASE
The Sooners, who are among the nation's best foul shooters, lead the Big 12 with a .759 season mark. OU's top four scorers are shooting at least .789 from the charity stripe and its top scorer, Hollis Price, owns an .852 season figure. Oklahoma has traditionally been a sound free throw shooting team under Kelvin Sampson as six of his first seven squads finished first or second in the league in the category. Last year, the Sooners paced the Big 12 with a .740 mark.

    BOARDED UP
In the Jan. 8 edition of the NCAA statistics release, Oklahoma ranked third nationally in rebounding margin with a +11.0 figure. Since that date, however, the Sooners have been outrebounded in six of nine games. OU still owns a +7.2 rebounding margin on the year.

SOONERS RANK WELL IN LEAGUE GAMES
In Big 12 Conference games, Oklahoma leads the league in free throw percentage (.768) and ranks second in scoring defense (68.1), scoring margin (+9.5), field goal percentage (.462), field goal percentage defense (.406), three-point percentage defense (.327), steals (8.6) and blocked shots (4.8). OU also ranks third in turnover margin (+3.3).

    VOTE HOLLIS
Kelvin Sampson has recently mentioned that Hollis Price should be considered for All-America honors. And why not. The junior guard, who has shown no ill-effects from a severed triceps tendon sustained in his right (shooting) arm last March, has been stellar all year for OU, especially recently. He has scored at least 24 points four times in the last nine games and is averaging 17.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals on the season. Nine times this year Price has converted at least three treys in a game. He has made six on two occasions, including a 6-for-7 performance against Texas Tech on Jan. 12. Price is having a great shooting year with his .502 field goal, .424 three-point and .852 free throw marks.

The New Orleans, La., native spent most of the offseason rehabilitating his arm after an injury during OU's NCAA Tournament game against Indiana State last spring. He collided with ISU's Kelyn Block and had a piece of Block's tooth embedded in the arm. Price underwent three surgeries within the span of a week to irrigate the wound, remove the tooth and repair the severed tendon. He missed his first career game this year (Dec. 29 against Texas Southern) after getting poked in the eye during practice two days earlier.

    McGHEE ENJOYS CONSISTENT SENIOR YEAR
Aaron McGhee, OU's 6-8, 250-pound senior forward who experienced a rollercoaster season last year, has been the team's most consistent producer of late . He averages 14.2 points to rank third on the team and averages a team-high 7.1 rebounds per contest. McGhee has posted his lone seven career double-doubles this year with the most recent coming Saturday at Texas A&M when he had 21 points and 10 boards. From Aurora, Ill., he enjoyed a 19-point, 19-rebound game against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 5, is averaging 17.0 points and 9.7 rebounds over the last six outings. He led the Sooners in rebounding just three times in their first 17 games but has done it each of the last five contests.

    WHITE'S A DELIGHT
Junior point guard Quannas White has played his best basketball of the season over the last seven games. White started the spurt by producing a career-high 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals at Kansas on Jan. 19 and has been sensational since. Over the last seven games he is averaging 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.6 steals. Prior to the KU game he averaged 6.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.6 steals. Not usually counted upon for his scoring, White prompted OU coach Kelvin Sampson to say after the Kansas game, "Quannas is more of a table-setter, but that doesn't mean he's not able to sit down and eat, too." White averages 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.8 steals in Big 12 play while shooting .476 from long range (10-for-21).

    ERE'S PRODUCTION FALLS SLIGHTLY
Junior guard Ebi Ere ranks second on the team with his 15.1 points per game and third with his 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists. The three-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week has seen his numbers slip of late, however. Over the last six games he is averaging 10.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists. Also, Ere was one of the league's best free throw shooters with an .889 (40-for-45) mark through 14 games. Over the last eight, however, he is shooting .615 (16-for-26) from the foul line. Ere had scored in double digits in 16 of the last 17 games prior to his seven- and eight-point efforts against Baylor and Texas A&M last week. He was a second-team junior college All-American last year at Barton County (Kan.) Community College when he averaged 25.5 points and 7.6 rebounds.

    DETRICK STRONG OFF THE BENCH
Junior college transfer Jason Detrick, who scored 18 points against Baylor last Wednesday, has been superb off the bench this year. The 6-5, 210-pound guard is averaging 10.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 20.9 minutes per contest. Detrick has scored in double figures in 10 of the last 16 games and is averaging 10.7 points over the span. Detrick was a first-team junior college All-American last year at Southwest Missouri State-West Plains.

    SELVY STEALING AND SHOOTING
Oklahoma's top steals man, Daryan Selvy is averaging 1.8 thefts per game to rank sixth in the Big 12. Selvy, who has at least two steals in five of the last eight contests, is also enjoying a solid shooting season with his .478 field goal mark. Last year in conference action, Selvy shot just .275 (22-for-80) from the floor. Over the last 15 games he is shooting .523 (46-for-88). He averages 7.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game on the year.

BROWN IS OU'S MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Is it coincidental that OU seems to be playing some of its best basketball in recent memory since Jabahri Brown became eligible 16 games ago? Maybe, but then again maybe not. Brown, OU's 6-10, 210-pound sophomore center who transferred from Rose State College in Midwest City, is averaging 5.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.2 steals for the Sooners. He also averages 6.3 altered shots per game (the stat is kept by the OU basketball staff). A native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Brown began his playing career at Florida International in 1999-2000 and signed with OU last November while a student at Rose State. He practiced with the Sooners last spring and this past fall. The athletic Brown has helped supply a defensive presence Coach Sampson has been seeking in the middle for several years. Brown averaged 8.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game as a freshman at Florida International.

    GILBERT LIKELY DONE FOR SEASON
Sophomore Johnnie Gilbert has likely played his last game of the season for the Sooners. The forward played in the team's first six games (started in five) and averaged 4.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots, but injuries have forced him to the sideline. Gilbert has a rotator cuff injury in his left (shooting) shoulder and he is also battling bursitis in his right hip.

    YOUTH IS SERVED
Of Oklahoma's 10 regular players who have seen action in the team's first 21 games, only one has multiple years of Division I experience at OU - junior guard Hollis Price. Seniors Aaron McGhee and Daryan Selvy are in their second seasons at OU after transferring from junior college, as is true sophomore Johnnie Gilbert. Junior Jozsef Szendrei and freshman Blake Johnston redshirted last year and are in their first full season of D-I competition. Juniors Jason Detrick, Ebi Ere and Quannas White are all in their first season after spending two years at junior colleges. Sophomore Jabahri Brown is in his first year at Oklahoma after playing his freshman year at Florida International.

More than 54 percent of OU's minutes this year are from first-year players. Ere leads the newcomers with 29.4 minutes per game and is followed by White (28.9), Brown (23.9) and Detrick (20.9).

    SOONER SUCCESS UNDER SAMPSON

  • Kelvin Sampson guided Oklahoma to a .791 combined winning percentage the past two seasons (53-14), the seventh best in NCAA Division I. Only Stanford, Duke, Michigan State, Iowa State, Tulsa and Cincinnati posted higher winning percentages over the span.
  • Last season's NCAA Tournament appearance marked Sampson's eighth straight as a head coach (seven with Oklahoma and one with Washington State). That streak ranks fifth among current coaches.
  • Oklahoma has finished 12th (2000) and 13th (2001) in the final AP poll the past two years.

    BOOK IT
Kelvin Sampson: The OU Basketball Story is now in bookstores. Written by Dallas Morning News' Steve Richardson and released in October, the book chronicles the Oklahoma head coach's journey from his childhood days in North Carolina to coaching stints at Michigan State, Montana Tech and Washington State, and to his current position at OU. The 269-page book is filled with interviews and accounts of former players, coaches and associates. Retail price is $18.95.

OU BOASTS NATION'S FOURTH-LONGEST POSTSEASON STREAK
Oklahoma has made 20 consecutive postseason appearances (16 NCAA and four NIT), the fourth-longest streak among Division I programs. Only North Carolina (35 years), Georgetown (27) and Indiana (24) own longer postseason streaks. The last time Oklahoma did not compete in the postseason was in 1980-81.

    MODEL OF CONSISTENCY
Oklahoma has registered a winning record in 24 of its last 25 seasons. No other Big 12 team can boast as many winning campaigns since the 1975-76 season as the Sooners. Entering the current campaign, OU had posted a 557-246 (.694) record over the past 25 years.
