Sooners Host Missouri in Big 12 Showdown

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma soccer hosts Missouri in a critical battle of Big 12 conference rivals on Friday night at 7 p.m. at John Crain Field in Norman.

The Sooners (9-3-0, 2-1-0 Big 12) split their games over the weekend. Oklahoma blanked TCU, 2-0, on Friday night in Norman before traveling to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. On Sunday, OU and ISU battled to double overtime before the Cyclones emerged with the 2-1 victory.

Against TCU, Oklahoma scored on a penalty kick in the fourth minute of play and never looked back in the 2-0 win at John Crain Field. The Sooners notched their seventh-straight home win and boosted their record to 13-1-1 in Norman over the past two seasons.

On Sunday in Ames, Iowa, OU suffered its first Big 12 loss when Iowa State midfielder Kelly Burke knocked in the loose ball off a free kick in the second overtime and the Cyclones upended OU, 2-1. The double-overtime game was the first time this season the Sooners didn't have a game decided at the end of regulation. But it was not a surprise it came against the Cyclones. The last five matchups in the series have been decided by just one goal with the last four decided in overtime.

With the loss to Iowa State, Oklahoma is now tied with Oklahoma State and behind conference leaders Texas and Texas A&M in the Big 12 standings.

Missouri (7-3-2, 2-1-1 Big 12) defeated Texas Tech, 5-1, on Oct. 4 and beat Baylor, 4-3, on Oct. 6.

MU's sophomore forward Melissa Peabody scored a hat trick and the Tigers outshot the Red Raiders, 27-8, as Missouri whipped Texas Tech, 5-1, in Lubbock Friday night.

On Sunday, the Baylor offense scored three goals against the Tigers in Waco, the Bear's highest total in conference play to date, but defensive letdowns led to four Missouri goals and the 4-3 win.

Missouri leads the overall series with Oklahoma by a 4-1 margin. However, the Sooners recorded their first win against the Tigers last season with a 2-1 victory in Columbia. Logan Womack scored an unassisted goal and passed to Heather Martinelli for a goal in the win.

A win on Friday would be OU's first against Missouri in Norman.

Career Goals Leader
Junior forward Logan Womack recorded the first hat trick in Oklahoma soccer history with her three scores against Big 12 rival Baylor on Sept. 27. Womack's final score gave her the career goals record at OU with 27, moving her past former Sooner Jonette Coquat (26 goals from 1998-2001).

Wingin' It
Senior Shannon Wing (Broken Arrow, Okla.) is in second place on the OU career assists list with 11. She's contributed three assists and two goals this season. Wing has 12 starts in 12 games for 2002, extending her streak to 69-straight starts for OU over the past four seasons.

First Goal
Redshirt freshman Heidi Kohlbacher scored her first career goal at OU on Oct. 6 against Big 12 rival Iowa State in Ames.

Dawson's Peak
Senior forward Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.) is in third place on the career assists chart with 10. She passed Heather Morrison (9) with an assist against Texas Tech on Sept. 29. Fellow teammate Shannon Wing is in second with 11 assists while former Sooner Jonette Coquat leads in the category with 15 career assists from 1998-2001.

Mac Attack
Freshman Lauren MacIver (Tulsa, Okla.) leads all newcomers at Oklahoma with nine points for the Sooners this season (three goals, three assists). MacIver scored twice against Big 12 rival Texas Tech for her first multiple goal game at OU.

Tough Road
Oklahoma's 2002 schedule includes six teams currently ranked in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll. OU dispatched No. 18 SMU, 1-0, on Sept. 13. The Sooners lost games to No. 2 Stanford on Sept. 20 and defending national champion and No. 10-ranked Santa Clara on Sept. 22. Big 12 rivals Texas (No. 4), Texas A&M (No. 8) and Nebraska (No. 15) are the ranked teams remaining for OU.
