NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team got its 2001 season off to a fine start with a 2-0 win over Texas Christian Sunday evening at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, in front of 425 fans. OU begins the year with a record of 1-0 while the Horned Frogs fall to 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Sooners got on the board when sophomore Logan Womack scored off a pass from junior Shannon Wing at 49:02. In the 71st minute, senior Jonette Coquat, OU's all-time leading scorer, made it 2-0 when she knocked in a rebound off senior Megan Olsen's shot from the left side of the goal. Coquat increased her career point total to 55.
Junior goalkeeper Jana Cunningham (1-0) earned the shutout as she stopped two TCU shots. Texas Christian goalkeeper Shannon Wagner (1-1) took the loss.
"This was a great win," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "We were a little disorganized at the start, probably because it was the first game of the year, but we got it together. Our forwards looked especially dangerous and, although we conceded a few shots, our defense did a good job of holding up."
The Sooners prevail in the season opener for only the second time in school history. The other came in 1998 when OU defeated Tulsa, 6-2.
Oklahoma's next game will be its home opener on Tuesday as it hosts Oral Roberts at 7:30 p.m. at the OU Soccer Complex.
