NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team, coming off its best season in school history, was picked fourth in the 2001 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll, the conference announced today. The Sooners were also selected seventh in the Soccer Buzz Central Region Poll.
Nebraska, the defending conference regular season and tournament champions, picked up nine of the 11 first-place votes. The Huskers have four players on the preseason All-Big 12 first team.
The strength of the Big 12 Conference is showed in the Central Region Poll with Nebraska, Texas A&M and Texas being ranked one, two and three, respectively. Last season, the Sooners defeated the Huskers in Lincoln (NU's first-ever loss to a Big 12 school at home) and the Longhorns twice. OU finished last year as the ninth-ranked team in the region.
Although Oklahoma (10-9-1 in 2000) does not have a player on the preseason all-conference team, it does return 19 letterwinners and nine starters, including sophomore Logan Womack and senior Jonette Coquat. Womack was a Big 12 second-team and all-newcomer team selection last year and Coquat is OU's all-time leading scorer.
The Sooners kick off the 2001 season on Sunday, Sept. 2, when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU at 6 p.m.
