NORMAN, Okla. - Former University of Oklahoma point guard Terry Evans, who coached the Midwest City High School boys basketball team to three state championships in the last four years, was named director of basketball operations today by OU head coach Kelvin Sampson.

Evans, a standout on the court and in the classroom for Billy Tubbs' Sooners from 1990-93, will be responsible for handling the day-to-day administrative duties of the basketball office. Evans will handle special projects, oversee OU teaching clinics and summer camps, assist with on-campus recruiting and also schedule practice times for visiting teams as well as for the Sooners on road trips.

"It's always been my goal to have our state represented on our Sooner staff," said Sampson. "Terry did a tremendous job at Midwest City High School. He's a young man who is destined for great things in this profession. Terry comes from a great family and background, and his father, Eddie, was a high school coach in Oklahoma for more than 30 years. Terry really personifies what we look for in a person and will be a great representative of the Sooner basketball program."

Said Evans, "It's an honor for me to even be considered for this job at the University of Oklahoma. I've always wanted to come back to OU and serve on the staff here. I've really enjoyed my time at the high school level, particularly at Midwest City, but to be a part of the Sooner tradition has definitely been a dream of mine.

"My career at Oklahoma shaped my coaching career," continued Evans. "I met a lot of great people and made many friends at OU. The relationships I developed with coaches, teammates and fans were special and I've wanted to be a part of those again."

Evans, 31, is OU's all-time leader in three-pointers (259), three-point attempts (698) and assists (651). He also ranks second in steals (265) and 13th in scoring (1,361 points) on OU's all-time charts. The three-time Academic All-Big Eight selection converted at least 58 three-pointers in each of his four seasons and averaged double figures in points his sophomore, junior and senior campaigns (he averaged 8.9 points as a freshman). Evans earned honorable mention All-Big Eight acclaim his final two seasons and averaged a career-high 14.0 points per game as a senior.

For the past four years, Evans taught business, marketing and computer classes at Midwest City High School and guided the Bombers to a 100-11 combined record and class 6A state titles in 1998, 2000 and 2001. His 1999 squad was a state tournament semifinalist. Prior to his stint at Midwest City, Evans served as head coach at Chickasha High School for one season and as an assistant coach at Edmond Santa Fe High School for one year. He also was the restricted earnings coach at TCU under Tubbs for six months during the 1994-95 season.

Evans earned a bachelor's degree from OU in business management in 1992 and a master's degree in human relations in 1995. His family includes wife Terri, 13-year-old stepdaughter Carli and three-year-old son Tre.
