OU Men's Basketball to Compete in Preseason NIT

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team will tip off the 2001-02 season against Central Connecticut in the first round of the 2001 Preseason National Invitation Tournament at Lloyd Noble Center Nov. 13. The date is believed to be the earliest for an OU season opener.

The first two rounds of the 16-team tournament will take place at campus sites throughout the country. With a victory in the first round, OU would face the winner of the Detroit-Michigan State contest. Detroit was the 2001 postseason NIT runner up while Michigan State was a national semifinalist. Second-round sites for games will be announced upon completion of the first round.

Other schools competing in the Sooners' bracket are DePaul, Fordham, Manhattan and Syracuse. The teams comprising the other half of the bracket are Arkansas, Fresno State, Maine, Montana Sate, UNC Wilmington, Southern California, Wake Forest and Wyoming.

The final two rounds will be held in New York City's Madison Square Garden Nov. 21 and 23.
