Sooners Boast Three On Verizon Academic District Football Team

NORMAN, Okla. - Three University of Oklahoma football players were named to the 2001 Verizon Academic District VI Football Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Sophomore running back Renaldo Works was the Sooners lone first team honoree, while senior deep snapper Ben Panter and sophomore defensive back Matt McCoy were selected to the second team.

With the honor, Works, who is enrolled in University Studies at OU, earned the first academic laurel of his career. Both Panter, a Zoology major, and McCoy, who is also enrolled in University Studies, received the award after picking up first team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2000.

To be eligible for the the team, players had to possess a 3.20 overall grade point average or better. District VI is comprised of schools in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas.
