NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team returns to the Howard McCasland OU Field House as it ushers in the 2001-02 season by hosting "Late Night with Sooner Basketball" Friday, Oct. 19, at approximately 9 p.m. The free event, which is sponsored by Arvest Bank, will start when the OU volleyball match versus Kansas State concludes. "Late Night" festivities will come to a close at approximately 11:30 p.m. Seating is limited so, to guarantee admission, fans are encouraged to pick up a free ticket at the OU Athletic Ticket Office or any Norman or Moore Arvest Bank location.

The fun will begin with a team autograph session that will last until approximately 10 p.m. Several basketball related warm-up activities will start the show on the court, including a student shoot-for-books contest with Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the Arvest Bank "Shoot for Loot" contest. A variety of prizes will be awarded throughout the evening and Hershey's will pass out free samples of its new "Fast Break" candy bar. The OU pom and cheer squads will perform, as well as the Sooner Showtime Band.

The Sooner squad will take part in a variety of aggressive and phyical drills, as well as a scrimmage, before holding its popular three-point shooting and slam dunk contests.

Of course, OU's first public practice would not be complete without the traditional rendition of "Boomer Sooner" by the team's newcomers. Six new players will showcase their vocal talents to wrap up the evening.

Oklahoma played its contests inside the OU Field House from the time the building opened in 1928 through the 1974-75 season.

Sampson's Sooners, who are ranked 16th in the nation this preseason by ESPN analyst Dick Vitale, play their first exhibition game Monday, Nov. 5, also at the OU Field House. OU plays another exhibition Friday, Nov. 9 at the newly renovated Lloyd Noble Center before opening the regular season Monday, Nov. 12 by hosting Central Connecticut in the Preseason NIT.
