NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma senior guard Nolan Johnson scored five points to help the Big 12 Men's Basketball All-Stars score a big win over the Basket Club of Vienna on Thursday in Vienna, Austria, 95-57. Johnson was 2-for-3 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free throw line while also recording a blocked shot and a steal.
A standing-room-only crowd gathered to watch as the All-Stars began to pull away after eight minutes of play never looked back. Iowa State's Jamaal Tinsley connected with Baylor's Terry Black on a pair of half-court alley-oops that brought the crowd to its feet as the Americans put on a show for the Austrian crowd. Texas A&M's Bernard King found Black on an off-the-backboard pass late in the game that served as the proverbial icing on the cake.
Luke Axtell of Kansas led the way in the scoring column, connecting on 3-of-5 three-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points. Axtell, playing in his first game in several months, showed no effects of the time off and had a strong first half on 6-of-8 shooting.
"It felt great to be out there," Axtell said after the game. "A game like this in a setting like this really bolsters your confidence. (Colorado) Coach (Ricardo) Patton has really given us a lot of freedom."
Also having a stellar showing was Texas Tech's Cliff Owens. After going 0-for-1 in the opening stanza, Owens was on fire in the second half, going 5-of-7 on his way to 11 points.
Asked about the differences in international play, Owens replied, "We made a few adjustments, but it wasn't that different. This game is universal."
The team returns to play on Saturday, Aug. 12, when it faces Arcadia Traiskirchen B.C. at 7 p.m. local time.
