Sooners Shut Out Southwest Missouri State, 8-0

NORMAN, Okla. -- - The seventh-ranked Oklahoma softball team run-ruled Southwest Missouri State, 8-0, Thursday at the OU Softball Complex in the opening game of the OU/adidas Classic. The Sooners improved their overall record to 14-1 while SMS dropped to 0-5.

Freshman first baseman Jennifer Stump led Oklahoma with two hits in two at bats. She also scored two runs and drove in two more. Junior catcher Ashli Barrett and sophomore Christy Ring also recored two runs each for OU. In addition, Barrett was credited with two RBIs in one official plate appearance. Ring went 1-for-2 at the plate.

Picking up the win was sophomore pitcher Jennifer Stewart. Stewart retired four out of nine batters in only three innings of action, pushing her season total to 52 strikeouts. Stewart and senior Lana Moran, who relieved Stewart after three innings, combined to allow Southwest Missouri State just one hit. Jessica Davis was credited with the loss.

OU took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Barrett, Stump and lead-off hitter Christy Ring, who walked to get on base, all came around to score for the Sooners.

In the second frame, 10 Oklahoma batters went to the plate when the Sooners scored five runs on five hits. OU was forced to wait three more innings for the run-rule to take effect.

The Sooners are back in action on Friday in the tournament. OU takes the field at 4 p.m. against No. 16 Cal-State Fullerton and at 6:30 against Mississippi.
