Houston, Texas - The University of Oklahoma baseball team improved to 5-2 on the season after capturing a 3-1 upset win over the #10 nationally-ranked Houston Cougars Saturday afternoon in Game Four of the Houston Tournament in Houston, Texas. Four Sooner pitchers combined to hold the Cougars to one run off nine hits as Rocky Cherry (1-0) picked up the victory for the Sooners and Jeff Bajenaru closed out the game to capture his second save on the year in as many days. Houston falls to 6-3 on the year with the loss.
OU tagged Cougar starter Shane Nance (2-1) early for two runs in the second inning. After a base hit and a stolen base allowed leftfielder Sean Murphy to move into scoring position, second baseman Zach Lekse drove in Murphy with another base hit. After Lekse took second base on the Cougars' attempt to throw Murphy out at the plate, third baseman Jason Bartlett hit a run-scoring single to drive Lekse home.
The Sooners scored the third run of the game in the ninth inning as a wild pitch by Houston reliever Matt Hooper allowed first baseman Rick Park to score from third.
The Cougars scored their only run of the game off a single by first baseman Sean Allen and three wild pitches by Cherry advanced Allen home.
At the plate, Murphy paced the Sooners with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored. Houston was led offensively by leftfielder Tyson Schweitzer and designated hitter Jarrod Bitter who both tallied 2-for-4 efforts on the afternoon.
OU will play its final game of the tournament tomorrow against Oral Roberts at noon.
