OKLAHOMA CITY - Tim Brassfield, Executive Director of the Oklahoma City All Sports Association, announced today that Oklahoma City will host the NCAA men's basketball tournament first and second rounds in 2003 and 2005, rather than 2002 as previously announced. Due to several different factors, Oklahoma City will now switch from 2002 to 2003 to host the event and, in the process, pick up an additional hosting year in 2005. The city of Dallas will now host the tournament's first and second rounds in 2002.
"The NCAA thought that it would be better for everyone involved if we pushed the event back a year to ensure that the new downtown arena was fully operational, including the experience of actually hosting a Division I basketball game," Brassfield said. "Obviously, we would like to host the event every year in Oklahoma City, but it is clear that this move is in the best interest of both the city and NCAA.
"It is also important to note that the NCAA continues to have great respect and support for Oklahoma City, as is evident by the awarding of the 2005 tournament. We are extremely excited to have this fantastic sporting event in our community twice over a three-year time period."
The 2003 and 2005 tournaments will mark the fourth and fifth times that the Oklahoma City All Sports Association will cohost the event with the University of Oklahoma. Tickets to the event may be purchased a year in advance through the All Sports office at (405) 236-5000.
