Oklahoma Head Coach Jack Spates:
"I thought the turning point in the meet was at the 149 and 157 pound
matches. I thought if we could have stolen one of those, then maybe the upset would give us the momentum
we needed to pull out the victory. Although Mark Worthy's injury really set us back, I thought those two
losses were the keys."
"This dual meet showed that we can compete with any team in the country. The problem we have is not the overall team, but the fact that, individually, we don't have a lot of guys who are highly ranked. In being an All-American team, we need some of our wrestlers to move up in the ranks."
Senior 141-pounder Michael Lightner:
On using the cradle:
"My frame-of-mind was if it's there, score
the points. I was frustrated at first because I wasn't executing. But Coach (Spates) told me to just be
patient and it paid off."
"As a senior now, I feel my responsibility is to be a leader on the team. That kind of leadership reflects on other guys and my victory today was evident of that."
Sophomore 165-pounder Robbie Waller:
"My victory today was a reflection on my recent practices. The
team and myself trained hard and smart for this meet. I came in with a different mentality. After sitting
out 10 days, I felt I was healthy, in shape and ready to go."
On Oklahoma State being ranked No. 1:
"I don't recall any of the guys talking much about the ranking. It was
more about the Bedlam series. We were looking at this meet as the "Bedlam rivalry" more than trying to
beat the number-one team in the country."
