OKLAHOMA HEAD COACH KELVIN SAMPSON
On the game:
"La Salle came out and played us
really hard. They have two outstanding forwards in Thomas and Butler. Those
guys are playing like a couple of pros. I haven't seen a player in the Big 12
with that kind of capability since Paul Pierce played for Kansas a few years ago.
We came out and played hard and were lucky to come away with a win. They are a
very good basketball team so this was a great win for our basketball team."
On OU's improvement as a team:
"I think our team is still trying to learn how to
play without Eduardo Najera. We don't really have a real go-to guy in our lineup
but we have a lot different players that have the ability to play up to that
potential. Tonight we had six guys in double figures. We rebounded well and our
transition game went well also. Obviously, having J.R. Raymond back helped us
out tonight. I think he is our purest guard. I think that Nolan Johnson can get
better and so can Daryan Selvy. Selvy played much harder and more aggressive
tonight and that helped us."
On senior guard Tim Heskett:
"Tim is really the leader of this team that everyone
looks to. Our players respect him because day in and day out, Tim never changes
and adds stability to this team. Tonight, he made some key three-pointers for
us."
LA SALLE HEAD COACH SPEEDY MORRIS:
On his team's performance:
"We knew they would
play hard, but we just didn't execute. We have two great shooters, but it takes a
team effort to get the offense going. We give credit to Oklahoma on defense for
taking away what we wanted to do. They killed us on the boards, and, at times,
our guys were out there playing like robots, not taking advantage of some
offensive opportunities. All in all, they won the game because they played
tougher, and that's why you play a great team in a tournament, to learn from your
mistakes and get better."
On Rasual Butler:
"Butler definitely got us close with his three-pointers, and if
he was not in the game, we would have lost by 30 points. He made some bad
decisions, but his overall performance was outstanding."
