NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team will usher in the 2000-01 season when it hosts "Late Night with the Sooners" Friday, Oct. 27, at Lloyd Noble Center. Doors to the free event, which is sponsored by Arvest Banks of Norman, Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Duncan, as well as The Norman Transcript, will open at 8 p.m. Festivities will conclude at approximately 10:45 p.m.
The fun will begin as the Oklahoma players and coaches will be available for autographs on the arena's upper concourse. The autograph session, as well as an interactive games session, will last until 8:55. A 9 p.m. welcome will start the night's formal activities. Several basketball related warm-up activities will be held on the court, including a student shoot-for-books contest. A variety of other prizes will be awarded throughout the evening. The OU pom and cheer squads, as well as the pep band, will perform before the introduction of a mystery guest.
At 9:30, a 1999-2000 SoonerVision video will highlight the performance of last year's 27-7 OU team. The 2000 NCAA Tournament banner will also be hoisted to the ceiling.
Head Coach Kelvin Sampson will address the crowd and introduce his 2000-01 squad before the team partakes in a variety of physical and aggressive drills. Following an intrasquad scrimmage, three-point and dunk contests will be held. A fan will be chosen to compete against the winner of the three-point contest, while the crowd will determine the best dunker.
Of course, OU's first public practice would not be complete without the traditional singing of "Boomer Sooner" by the team's newcomers. Six new players, who collectively rate as one of the top recruiting classes in the country, will showcase their vocal talents to wrap up the evening.
Sampson's Sooners, who are ranked 11th in the nation this preseason by Blue Ribbon Yearbook, play their first exhibition game Saturday, Nov. 4 at home. OU hosts Alcorn State in its regular season opener Friday, Nov. 17, in the Sooner Invitational at Lloyd Noble Center.
