NORMAN, Okla. - Seven University of Oklahoma volleyball student-athletes were named to the 1999 Big 12 Conference All-Academic team. The Sooners tied Texas for the second most honorees, while Nebraska was represented with nine all-academic selections.
Earning first-team honors for OU were seniors Melissa Christman, Melissa Stringfield and Robin Wieskus and juniors Allison Silveira and Maxine Zubiaga. Danielle Cornelius-Bookout and Carolyn Kittell were named to the second team.
Christmas, a journalism major, played in 108 games and averaged 2.61 kills per game. Stringfield, a finance major, and Wieskus, who's majoring in management information systems, saw limited action due to injuries. Silveira and Zubiaga were defensive specialists and regulars in the Sooners' rotations as they collected 117 and 165 digs, respectively. Silveira is majoring in meteorology while Zubiaga is studying zoology.
Cornelius-Bookout and Kittell were two mainstays in the Sooners' lineup. Cornelius-Bookout, a communications major, averaged a team-high 3.04 kills per game and ranked third in blocks per game with 0.71. Kittell, the team's starting setter, is a marketing major who ranks fourth on the school's all-time assist chart with 2,355.
