San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team was defeated by Cal Poly, 3-1, Saturday and placed second at the 1999 Cal Poly Hotel Classic at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif. In front of a crowd of 694, the Mustangs won the match, 13-15, 15-6, 15-11 and 15-4. Cal Poly finished undefeated in the tournament (3-0), while the Sooners finished 2-1.

OU could not muster any type of offense as it ended the match with a .095 hitting percentage and 33 hitting errors. Meanwhile, Cal Poly hit .225 in the match. In the fourth game, the Sooners registered a -.026 mark.

The Mustangs were led by junior outside hitter Melanie Hathaway. In game three, Hathaway served seven consecutive points and recorded three straight aces to give Cal Poly an 11-8 lead. She finished with 15 kills, five aces and 11 digs. Mustang senior middle hitter Kari DeSoto was named the tournaments most valuable player after her 18-kill, 13-dig, 10-block performance in the victory over OU.

The Sooners were led by Danielle Cornelius-Bookouts team-high 14 kills. Junior setter Carolyn Kittell, named to the all-tournament team, recorded 42 assists and 13 digs. She finished with 160 assists in OUs three tournament matches. Also selected to the all-tournament team for OU was Cathy Cook. The junior middle blocker had six kills and seven blocks in the match.

The kids played pretty well, said OU Head Coach Miles Pabst. We have got a lot of work to do. We were up 8-4 and were tied at 11-11 in the third game, so we had our chances. We played Chantae Weathers in the last couple of games and she did an outstanding job, so we are excited about that. We will have to make some adjustments when we get back home to get ready for our home matches.

Oklahoma will begin its home schedule next weekend in the Sooner Invitational, Sept. 10-11. The Sooners open the tournament against Arkansas-Little Rock at 8 p.m. Friday. Their next two matches will be at noon and 5 p.m. Saturday versus Wichita State and Wyoming, respectively.
