EVANSTON, Ill. - In its first match today, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team was defeated by LSU, 15-10, 8-15, 17-19, 12-15. The Sooners are now 1-2 at the Wildcat Classic in Evanston, Ill. OU also dropped to 5-4 on the season while the Tigers improved to 6-6 overall.
OU will play its second match of the day and its fourth of the tournament tonight at 7:30 p.m. against host Northwestern.
Four Sooners recorded double-digit kills in the losing effort. Leading Oklahoma was junior Maria Holmgren and sophomore Chantae Weathers with 13 kills each. In addition, senior Melissa Christman and junior Cathy Cook added 12 kills apiece. As a team, OU registered a .257 hitting percentage, but hurt itself with a total of 14 service errors in the match. Defensive specialist Maxine Zubiaga contributed 10 digs and setter Carolyn Kittell posted 47 assists.
LSU was led by Meagan Davis' 15 kills and .448 hitting percentage. The Tigers finished the match with a .269 hitting efficiency and landed 11 service aces.
