Undefeated and 21st-ranked Oklahoma (9-0) hosts fourth-ranked Cincinnati (8-1) Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center. The game will be broadcast on the Sooner Basketball Radio Network (flagship KOMA 1520 AM in Oklahoma City). Bob Barry, Sr., (play-by-play) and Mark Mathew (analyst) will call the action. The contest will also be televised nationally by ESPN. Ron Franklin (play-by-play) and Jon Sundvold (analyst) will announce.
Oklahoma Update
The Sooners, coming off their largest victory margin of the season (39 points) against Georgia Southern, enter the week as one of 10 remaining unbeaten NCAA Division I teams. OU is ranked 21st in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. Oklahoma also finds itself rated highly in the College RPI Report and Sagarin power ratings at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively (as of Monday).
Shooting has been the name of Oklahoma's game so far this season. OU owns a .501 field goal percentage and has shot at least .500 from the floor in five of nine games (last year it recorded just three .500 or better performances). Oklahoma is also shooting a sparkling .441 from three-point range and .742 from the foul line.
Senior forward Eduardo Najera and sophomore guard J.R. Raymond have been the team's go-to guys on the offensive end of the court. Najera is averaging 18.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest while Raymond is averaging 18.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Raymond is shooting .534 from three-point land and also leads the Big 12 in three-pointers per game with 3.4.
About Cincinnati
Cincinnati won its first eight games this season and attained the No. 1 ranking in both major polls before losing at crosstown rival Xavier Saturday night, 66-64. Currently ranked fourth in both polls, the Bearcats fell to the Musketeers despite shooting .500 to Xavier's .391. Cincinnati is 2-0 at home, 1-1 on the road and 5-0 at neutral sites.
Regarded as one of the country's best big men, senior center Kenyon Martin leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with his 15.7 and 9.8 respective per-game averages. Martin is shooting a team-high .563 from the field and averages a team-best 3.1 blocks per contest. Freshman guard DerMarr Johnson ranks second on the squad in scoring (13.8 ppg) and has reached double figures in all but two outings. Sophomore point guard Steve Logan averages 12.7 points and 4.2 assists per game. He averaged 16.2 points and shot .667 (14-for-21) from three-point land in UC's first five games, but has averaged 8.3 points and shot .308 (4-for-13) in the team's last four.
Cincinnati is coached by 11th-year mentor Bob Huggins. The former two-time Academic All-American at West Virginia, owns a 255-83 (.754) record with the Bearcats and is 423-155 (.732) in his 19th year as a collegiate head coach.

Series with Cincinnati
Oklahoma owns a 2-1 series edge versus Cincinnati. The teams first met in the 1985 All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City. The Sooners won that contest by a 78-65 count as Darryl Kennedy and Tim McCalister led five OU players in double figures with 19 points apiece.
In the 1991 postseason NIT, Oklahoma won a second-round 89-81 overtime affair in Norman. OU rallied from eight points down with 1:20 left in regulation to force the extra session where it outscored the Bearcats, 11-3.
Last year in Cincinnati, third-ranked UC rode the inside play of Pete Mickeal (17 points, 10 rebounds), Kenyon Martin (12 points, 7 boards) and Ryan Fletcher (13 points) in a 72-59 win on Jan. 16. OU's loss snapped its six-game winning streak. Tim Heskett made 4-of-6 three-pointers and finished with a team-high 16 points while Eduardo Najera scored 11 and corralled a game-high 12 rebounds.
Recapping the Georgia Southern Contest
The Sooners recovered nicely from final exam week as they handed Georgia Southern a 102-63 defeat Saturday at Lloyd Noble Center. OU posted season highs in points, winning margin (39), field goals (39), field goal attempts (66), field goal percentage (.591), three-point field goals (tied season best with 12) and assists (26).
Reserves Victor Avila and Kelley Newton were the stars offensively on a night that saw OU's starters receive significant rest. Senior center Avila earned his first-career double-double by matching career highs with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He also handed out a career-high four assists. Newton, OU's junior guard who redshirted last year while recovering from a knee injury, drained 6-of-7 three-point attempts and finished with a game-high and career-best 18 points.
Preseason All-American Eduardo Najera played 18 minutes despite battling the flu and contributed 16 points while guard J.R. Raymond added 12 points on 4-for-6 three-point shooting. Junior Jameel Heywood's 13 points off the bench were a career high. OU reserves outscored the starters, 60-42. Freshman walk-on James Osborne finished the game with three points, the first of his career, and senior center Oleg Reztsov scored his first point of the season.
Georgia Southern, which fell to 5-4, was led in scoring by Ra'Shawn Tart's 13 points. Freshman Julius Jenkins, who had been averaging a team-high 20.9 points entering the game, was limited to nine points on 3-of-13 shooting.
Coming Up
The Sooners resume play after Christmas at the All-College Tournament at Oklahoma City's The Myriad Dec. 29-30. The first game on the 29th will feature Arkansas State and Valparaiso at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the OU versus Mount St. Mary's contest. The consolation game will be played the 30th at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the championship game. Oklahoma's final non-conference game will be played Jan. 3 versus Lamar in Norman.
Shooting Tells Story
Oklahoma ranks first in the Big 12 in three-point percentage (.441), second in free throw percentage (.742) and third in field goal percentage (.501). The Sooners have never shot as well from beyond the arc for an entire season and the last time they shot as well from the field was in 1984-85 (.508). In fact, OU teams have shot .500 or better from the field just four times in school history. The last time an Oklahoma squad shot .742 from the foul line was in 1994-95 (.747), Kelvin Sampson's first season as head coach.
OU Leads League in Scoring Defense
Though he has expressed unhappiness with his team's defense at times this season, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has watched his Sooners climb to the Big 12's top spot in points allowed. Oklahoma surrenders an average of 62.3 points per game, fewest in the conference. Combined with its 79.6 points per game (ranks third in Big 12), OU ranks second in the league with its +17.3 scoring margin.
Sooners Burying Threes
Historically an excellent three-point shooting team under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, Oklahoma has done nothing to jeopardize that label so far this season. Through nine games, the Sooners have made 83-of-188 trey attempts for a .441 mark (the school record of .414 was set in 1986-87). Sooner guards are shooting an amazing .491 on the year. Bucking the Trend
Entering the season, Oklahoma's points-per-game average has decreased nearly every year since the 1987-88 campaign (OU averaged 102.9 points per contest in that Final Four season). Last year, the Sooners averaged 70.2 points per game, their lowest figure since 1977-78, but this year OU is averaging 79.6 points per contest (ranks third in Big 12).

Najera Climbing OU Charts
Preseason All-American and John R. Wooden Award candidate Eduardo Najera has already collected a number of in-season honors with his fast start. The senior forward is averaging 18.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game (both team highs) and was named Top of the World Classic MVP in mid-November and was also named to the Sooner Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team. He also earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week acclaim last week. Najera, who shot .415 from the field and .642 from the free throw line last year, has posted .465 and .750 marks so far this season.
The Chihuahua, Mexico, native entered the season ranked 29th in OU career scoring and 15th in career rebounding, but now ranks 21st (1,185 points) and 13th (665 rebounds). Najera needs 27 points to move into 20th place on the all-time scoring list (ahead of Corey Brewer) and 35 points to move into the 19th slot (ahead of Bobby Jack). In nine games this season, he has already passed Cary Carrabine (1,034 points), Scott Martin (1,078), Joe King (1,085), Damon Patterson (1,099), Terry Stotts (1,104), Willie Rogers (1,153), Brent Price (1,173) and Lester Lane (1,180) in career scoring.
Raymond One of League's Top Newcomers
Sophomore point guard J.R. Raymond, who sat out his freshman season as a partial qualifier, leads the team and ranks sixth in the Big 12 in scoring (18.0 ppg). He also averages a Big 12-best 3.4 three-pointers per game and leads OU in assists (3.2 apg) and steals (1.7 spg). Raymond has made a team-high 31 three-pointers on 58 attempts (.534). He is shooting .505 from the field and .862 from the charity stripe.
In his collegiate debut versus Montana State Nov. 19 in Fairbanks, Alaska, Raymond made 9-of-16 field goal attempts, including 5-of-9 three-point tries, and finished with a game-high 29 points. He also contributed six rebounds and five assists in the 91-76 victory and went on to earn Top of the World Classic All-Tournament Team honors. Raymond's 29-point outburst is believed to be the second-highest scoring total by a Sooner in his collegiate debut. In 1972, center Alvan Adams scored 38 points and collected a school-record 28 rebounds against Indiana State in his first-ever game.
Stone Racks Up Assists
Senior Renzi Stone, one of the best passing big men in the Big 12, has been doling out assists at a rapid rate. The center has 10 assists in his last two games (a combined 34 minutes). Stone has recorded four or more assists three times this season and racked up a career-high six in just 12 minutes of action against Georgia Southern Saturday. He ranks third on the team with 20 assists (2.2 per game) and owns a 1.5 assist/turnover ratio.
Freshman Price Makes First Start
True freshman Hollis Price, who has been one of the team's most productive players recently, made his first career start Saturday versus Georgia Southern. In OU's last five games, the guard from New Orleans is averaging 26.4 minutes, 9.2 points, 4.8 assists and 2.2 steals. Price is shooting .559 (19-for-34) from the field this season, .467 (7-for-15) from three-point land and .762 from the foul line. He also sports an impressive 2.5 assist/turnover ratio.
Second-Half Surge
The Sooners have been extremely impressive after halftime so far this season. Through nine contests, OU is averaging 42.4 points per second half compared to its opponents' 32.3 figure. By comparison, in the first half of its games, Oklahoma is averaging 37.1 points to its opponents' 30.0. The Sooners have been outscored in just two of 18 halves this year (39-32 in second half vs. San Diego and 36-32 in first half vs. UC Irvine).
Nine-Game Streak Longest Under Sampson
For the first time in five-plus seasons as OU's head coach, Kelvin Sampson has directed his team to a nine-game winning streak. Prior to this year, the longest skein under Sampson was eight games (1997-98 season).
Head Coach Kelvin Sampson
Now in his 17th year as a collegiate head coach, Kelvin Sampson is in his sixth year at the Oklahoma helm. He has averaged 20.6 wins per season at OU and is one of two Big 12 coaches, Kansas' Roy Williams is the other, to lead his team to the NCAA Tournament each of the last five seasons.
Sampson began his head coaching career in 1980 at Montana Tech when he was hired as the program's interim head coach. He recorded a 73-45 mark in four seasons and was inducted into the school's sports hall of fame two years ago.
In 1988, Sampson was named head coach at Washington State and compiled an even 103-103 record over seven years, including two 20-win campaigns.
Hired by Oklahoma on April 25, 1994, he has guided the Sooners to a 112-55 (.671) record and a 67-13 (.838) home mark. In 1997-98, OU finished tied for second place in the Big 12 Conference and played in the league's postseason tournament championship game. Last year, he directed OU to another second-place league finish and an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance.
Sampson was named the 1995 national coach of the year by the Associated Press, the USBWA and Basketball Times.

Big 12 Begins Season in Fine Fashion
Heading into the week, Big 12 schools have posted a 74-27 (.733) cumulative record. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (both 9-0) are the lone remaining undefeated teams, though six others have lost just twice. Three squads have captured neutral-court tournament crowns: Oklahoma won the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska (beat Montana State, George Washington and California), Kansas won the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska (beat Georgia, Xavier and Georgia Tech), and Texas won the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico (beat Arizona State, DePaul and Michigan State). Iowa State finished second at the Big Island Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii, losing only to Cincinnati in the title game.
Four Big 12 teams are ranked in both major polls. In the AP poll, Kansas (8-2) is ranked 12th, Oklahoma State is 13th, Texas (6-2) is 14th and Oklahoma is 21st. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, Kansas is ranked 11th, Oklahoma State is 13th, Texas is 14th and Oklahoma is 21st.

Oklahoma has now made 18 consecutive postseason appearances (14 NCAA and four NIT), the fourth-longest streak among Division I programs. Only North Carolina, Georgetown and Indiana own longer postseason streaks (North Carolina and Indiana made last year's NCAA field while Georgetown competed in the NIT). Hosted by veteran Oklahoma City television sports anchor Bill Teegins, "Inside Sooner Basketball with Kelvin Sampson" will air Fridays at 2:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest. The half-hour show will also be seen in Oklahoma City on KWTV Channel 9 Saturdays at 11 a.m. and in Tulsa on TCI Cablevision Channel 9 Fridays at 6 p.m.
